For MD residents .... how do you go about purchasing an AR platform rifle new?

Do you go out of state? Are there any restrictions/rules about doing that? Can you order a rifle and have it shipped to an FFL there, and pick it up there and bring it back in state?

NOT trying to break any laws, just want to understand what rules are in place to ensure that I do things correctly if I wanted to pursue a future purchase.

Thanks for any (usable and realistic) advice. :p

An example. Order a .223 with heavy barrel from CLE. They will stamp HBAR on the barrel and ship to a MD FFL for you to pick up. Or you can just buy something a MD shop has in stock.

You can buy .223/5.56 AR so long as the manufacturer is marketing it as an HBAR (note that this was meant only to exempt the Colt Sporter HBAR but currently applies to anything called HBAR by the maker; there is no legal definition of an HBAR contour). Other caliber ARs and AR308s are not restricted to HBAR configuration. These transactions are cash and carry so you can buy from an in-state FFL or transfer in from an out-of-state FFL (you should also be able to buy an HBAR or other caliber AR directly from an out-of-state FFL but good luck finding one that understands that you can actually do such a thing).

You can buy an AR15 receiver (in-state) and build it as a .223/5.56 rifle so long as you use an HBAR barrel (again, the manufacturer must describe the barrel as HBAR). You can build it as a pistol or other caliber rifle with any contour barrel. AR receivers require an MSP application and are subject to a wait period (AR lowers that can not be configured as .223/5.56 rifles are cash and carry).

I heard they are gonna make your register pretty much any semi auto.

Then they can take them in a few years like CA or Nazi germany. And the “just doing my job “ types will all do it. A lot will take glee in it.

I’m going to register my ar15 or just see if there’s a place to turn it in.

@deersniper - honestly not trying to start a fight here or be a smart ass but i'm not sure if you are being serious or sarcastic. but yes 1261 is registration which we all know will lead to confiscation. basically going back after the HBARs now that they realize the work around we've all been using. also going after AR-10's which i've never seen before. permission to ask the crown to keep what you starts at $300 per firearm...

$300? Il just turn them in now. I like my bolt guns they will always be safe.
I will turn my silencers in too. my neighbors said my guns weren’t loud enough anyway.

Thanks all. I did not realize that you could still purchase some of the AR variants. I had thought they were all banned here. (Talk about lazy ... could have just frickin' Googled it!). I looked up to see what some of the shops locally have in stock, and found a link that helps a lot as to what you can and cannot currently purchase.

For those interested, here is the current banned list per MSP:

Yea the best way to buy an AR-15 is to walk into a gun store, give them your money, fill out the paperwork, and walk out. If you are looking for an m4 government profile barrel type AR-15, then you will have issues. If you don’t mind having a little more meat on your barrel, there are plenty of options.
