There was lots of back and forth going on and at one point Peter Jackson was removed from the project. After being in limbo for a couple of years everything suddenly fell into place and since early this year they've been going full bore with production.

Re: For The Hobbit Fans

We were hunting in NZ last year about now and took a tour of hobbitown - they were in the middle of construction / reconstruction for this movie. It was pretty cool. We have been really looking forward to seeing this movie.

Re: For The Hobbit Fans

While there have been rumors for a few weeks, as of this morning it's official: there will be a third film.

<span style="font-style: italic">An unexpected journey
by Peter Jackson on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 3:30am ·

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit
down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and
I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the
first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased
with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength
of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of
which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell
more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the
film-makers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the
Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol
Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness
of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in
the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full
story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the
sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros.
Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and
crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will
become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor
Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Re: For The Hobbit Fans

I just re-read The Hobbit on deployment. It's a fantastic story, I'm just wondering how Peter Jackson can squeeze three movies out of it. LOTR was three movies based on three fairly large books. The Hobbit series will be three movies based on one book that I believe is shorter than any of the LOTR books. I hope that Jackson's going to go very in-depth on the story and not just try to eek more movies out of the story line for the sake of cash. I can't wait to see the movies, but I do doubt that ability to make that one book into a trilogy.

Re: For The Hobbit Fans

My take on it is they will make the two movies from The Hobbit and a third based on Tolkiens history of middle earth book, the Silmarillion, to tie together the time between the two events. I could be wrong though.

Re: For The Hobbit Fans

Nah, the Silmarillion is off limits, according to what I've been told by people in the know. Up until about 3 weeks ago (when filming completed and we had a big wrap party) it was two long films covering the single book. There will be more filming, as far as I can tell, but not on the scale of the last year and a half. But what what I gather it's been planned as two films that are roughly 3 hours each. With some additional filming and post production, I suspect that will re-edit it to be three slightly shorter films.
