Here are a couple pics of my new Winchester Pre 64 Target 3006. I think it's a 1958 model. This thing is just damn near in new condition. I guess I will now be in the market for a skinny scope. [img:center]

Re: For the Winchester fan

Glad Ya'll like it. I picked up the rifle from a friend that had 3 of them. When I saw this one I got a little light headed and started reaching for my wallet. The bore looks as nice as the rest of the gun. I think he was the first one to shoot it and has less than 50 rds down the tube. He gave me his test targets and with Fed Gold 168s a couple 3 shot groups were right at .75" and one a little better. Can't wait to see for myself.

Re: For the Winchester fan

That is a nice one. I just picked one up that has been rechambered and had the bolt face opened for 300winmag that looks like the identical twin to your rifle. I did a web search for Winchester born on dates and found out mine was built in 1955.

Re: For the Winchester fan

I was a remmy 700 fan and still am. but when i picked up a 30-06 stainless classic boss for pennies, I have a new found respect for these rifles. especially when i first shot it bone stock vs. my sps-v in a B&c a2. thats a nice stick you got there

Re: For the Winchester fan

The thing I love most about these old Winchesters is the fact that unless its been cooked on a hot dog town or really mistreated they shoot as good as they look!

top '56 swift varminter, '57 .243 win ,'57 52C HB all are tackdrivers with pet factory ammo. I would post target pics but folks would get mad cause I dont shoot 10 ,5 shot groups at the time

100 yd using Fed UltraMatch UM1 ammo Im out if anyone has a line on any I need more as this ole gal loves it!

Re: For the Winchester fan

Thanks, It took years and a lot of trading to build my Winchester collection and I hunt, shoot every one. I put a 36x Leup on em when I get em and see what they will do, I traded thru 4 in .223, in post 64 sporter varmint before I got one that would shoot like I wanted. You are well on your way with your Target. Ill bet with tuning , good glass and a little work you will see some .3's with her.

It looks like your set up for Apertures, too. I'd try that first. If you are determined to go the skinny scope route, I'd get a hold of this guy:

I love the Winchester pre64 M70. I have one waiting to get barrel for a USMC sniper replica. I have been looking at the Unertl scopes too and hard to get sometimes the one that I want.

Re: For the Winchester fan

I thought about having TBA do the build but the wait is too long though. I waited a year and a half for my M40a3 from him. There is a guy that I live close to that is going to do it. I would love to get my hands on a build from TBA because I know that their work is awesome and the accuracy is great. I still might change my mind and have TBA do it. Who did yours?

Re: For the Winchester fan

Is that how you bought it or did you send it back and get it done? I have eveything that I need except for the barrel. But the big thing that I have a question is how far down the barrel is the mount? I have the book "The One Round War" by Peter Senich which has a lot of great info on the M70 Sniper but it doesnt really say where exactly that mount goes.

Re: For the Winchester fan

I’m really not sure of the proper location for the mounting blocks. But I know this is an original Winchester M70 target model built in 1958.

Re: For the Winchester fan

These guns came from Winchester with scope blocks installed + the rear bridge drilled for modern scope mounts ( post WWII ). Every one Ive ever shot were accurate. I think they changed the cutting tool for single point cut rifling often on varminter and target models.

Re: For the Winchester fan

For those that haven't figured it out yet, this is exactly the type of rifle in this configuration that the Marine Corps MWR had for competition shooting. These rifles also found there way to RVN in the hands of snipers early in the war. Carlos Hathcock drove one just like this for his first tour. Add the 8X Unertl and you have the total historical package.

Cheers,

Doc
