Forming 7-08 from 308

Re: Forming 7-08 from 308

I run 308 through a Redding FL sizing die, done.

Trimming isn't necessary as the brass formed from 308 has been in my experience shorter than 7-08 max case length by .020"+.

Does the .020 legnth pose any problem? I thought the general rule was .010 under max?

Just curious...

Re: Forming 7-08 from 308

The .308 brass will thicken when necked down. Be sure to check fired diameter in your rifle v/s loaded round diameter...depending on your brass you may have to neck turn...try different brass makes, Winchester and Black Hills being, in my experience, thinner to begin. JMHO

Re: Forming 7-08 from 308

Good point FNP, I just sized a bunch of FGMM 308 once fired brass for my 7-08 and when loaded its right at or just under the SAAMI spec of .315". Looks like I'll should invest in a case guage. The Fed chambers fine in my rifle, and I'm hoping may be more consistent if its closer to filling the chamber neck.

For what its worth, R-P 308 match brass is thinner in the necks the FGMM, my 7-08 loaded from R-P 308 is running around .313", and R-P 7-08 factory brass is at .310".

lockedandloaded-the .020" shorter is 308 brass that I had already trimmed .015" under 308 spec, then necked down. The 1X fired FGMM I just necked down for a new batch without any trimming is running right around 2.030" (.005" shorter than max trim length). I never had any problems with the shorter batch, but the necks probably weren't sealing optimally well, as there'd be carbon on them after firing.

Re: Forming 7-08 from 308

The necks WILL thicken...some. But only a tad over .001", not enough to matter in a factory chamher.

You would do well to (properly) anneal the new necks if you want the cases to last long.
