So I just finished reading an article on the Reformation from FA- an 11.5" 300BO with binary trigger and full stock... being sold without NFA Paperwork. Per the 27 CFR 479.11 and 26 USC 5845, a "rifle" has to have a "rifled bore". The Reformation does not have rifling- the lands and grooves in the barrel are straight.

So kudos to a loophole (as long as its open) but it got me thinking: what are shotgun slug guns with rifled barrels? They have rifling (with twist) so it would push me to think of them as "rifles" per the above definitions. How short could you go on the barrel legal-wise?

It may be a case of ‘once a <thing>, always a <thing>. Order of assembly during manufacturing is the determining factor I think. If the original incarnation is ‘violated’ and a new classification is entered, I think that’s where paperwork and tax stamps come in. Just my opinion based on a 50+ page thread on barfcom about the Reformation and some reading done independently.
