Gunsmithing Free float barrel clearance?

I've owned a few bolt guns and tinkered with them along the way. I had my first two custom barreled actions assembled and delivered in the last couple of months. The first I got back fitted in HS precision stock (skim bedded) and the second I fitted (also skim bedded). My question is what is the minimum clearance recommended between the barrel and stock at the narrowest point?
I have 0.020" (5 sheets of printer paper) on the pre assembled gun and about 0.024" (6 sheets of printer paper; measured) on the one on the one I've been working the barrel channel. These are both Rem varmint contour if that may be of consideration and both are not bedded in front of the recoil lug. My previous factory Rem 700 Varmint I restocked had a bit more clearance. I would guess about 0.040", but I don't have it anymore to check.
I've read anywhere between one crisp bill up to 0.070".
Any help or constructive opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think it depends on the rigidity of the stock in question, but you will be fine with both of the ones you mentioned. If the stock had a flimsy forend and you loaded it up on a bipod you'd want more clearance than normal.

Had a friend measure his 5R. It's at 0.040" (10 sheets). Both mine get tight right at the throat taper and are probably closer to 0.040" every where else. I would keep working it down, but decided to paint the channel once I got what I thought was enough.
I'll shoot it more like it is and see. May work it down more later on. It's a new gun and I wanna shoot it!
