From SPS Tactical to M40a5 in small steps?

Today I have an SPS Tactical, .308, and one day I would like to have something as close to a current issue M40 as possible. Only problem, I don't want to drop thousands of dollars all at once. I'd like to acquire the parts over time, and I'd like the parts to be useful to me as I go.

Obviously there are a lot of things I can start buying bit by bit now, and swap into my SPS Tactical. Scope, scope rings, mounting rail, trigger, sling, bipod, and so on.

One of my big questions is about the stock. Am I right that in general I can get an A4 stock and drop my SPS Tactical in it, and then later one day replace the action and the barrel with stainless steel / milspec versions from the police rifle.

Second, there would seem to be a bunch of things that will have to be purchased at the same time as the stock. I would prefer to order the stock inlet properly from McMillan up front, and not have to send it for machining later, so what has to be bought at the same time? Badger DM I assume for one. What else?

How about recoil lugs? I don't want to rebarrel my SPS Tactical, I would rather not acquire recoil lugs until I'm ready put a proper barrel on, so does that mean barrel before stock? Or can I inlet for lugs and make do until later?

Would like some general advice on this. I really would like to get the stock sooner than later, to get the look going, even though I won't have all the other parts for awhile. That would just be cool

But if that's going to create a world of pain for me, then I'll concentrate on all the other things, like rails, slings, bipods, scopes, etc., until I can replace the base rifle.

Thoughts?

Your best bet would be to order the stock and badger M5 bottom metal then drop your barreled action into it. Have a trigger job performed and you'll be good for now.

Shoot your factory barrel out then when you re-barrel you can have the action trued/squared/bedded and rebarrelled to an M40 barrel.

Great! That's what I was hoping to hear.

Anything special I should tell McMillan when I order the stock? Barrel contour the same? Should I specify anything about recoil lugs?

I wish. Unfortunately your State Department considers exporting a bolt action rifle to Canada to be worse than selling nuclear secrets to Iran. I have to purchase through Canadian gun shops that have done all the ITAR paperwork

Short story, my only really good option is to build it myself.

Just let McMillan know you want to order a Marine Corp spec A4 but you need the barrel channel to be a Remington Varmint/Sendero contour. I beleive that's what the SPS contour is. It will fit nicely in the stock without any gaps, then when you re-barrel to a M40 contour the smith can just open the channel up.

You will not need to worry about recoil lugs right now. When you have the action trued/squared/bedded the smith will also do this.

Re: From SPS Tactical to M40a5 in small steps?

They'll have to remove the bedding around the recoil lug area and likely re-bed. Not sure if the original bedding would have to be removed after having an action trued however.

Re: From SPS Tactical to M40a5 in small steps?

Thanks guys very helpful. Jello, I guess I won't bed it while it's still using the SPS tactical barrel, I'll wait until I have the upgraded barrel. I won't try to tune for maximum accuracy until towards the end of the process when I've got everything in place.

I was really just wondering whether it would be useful to ask McMillan to inlet for recoil lugs now, even though I don't yet have them.

So I've ordered the A5 from McMillan, and picked up Badger bottom metal. Now all I have to do is wait "12 to 20 weeks" lol.

In the meantime wondering what else I can upgrade on the SPS tactical to bring me incrementally closer to spec. Trigger maybe? Looking for the things that would make the biggest difference up front.

If I'm not mistaken I thought the triggers were re-worked factory triggers which can be made to be just as nice as a lot of custom triggers. 2-21/2 lbs should do you well and will not only stick with your spec build but also improve your shooting skills.

Yeah you're right I ordered the A4 stock; trying to match M40a5 spec. Sorry for the confusion.

Only big decision there was ordering molded OD instead of some camo or swirl pattern.
