I had a Caldwell Rock BR. When I started shooting F-Open, I outfitted the Caldwell with a Protektor 3" Cordura front bag, the F-Class leg screws (front two leg screws only), and the big F-Class feet. You can use long screws and washers in place of the screws/feet to economize.

Shot it for a while, but was really dissatisfied with the top. I replaced it with a Shadetree joystick top. Butch will gladly sell you one with a post that fits the Caldwell Rock BR base. Also replaced the Protektor with a Edgewood bag with a reinforced bottom.

If your gun doesn't have a 3" wide foreend (which seems to be the case if you can put a bipod on it, something like the Whidden Track Plate really helps your gun ride the bags. When leveling your reticle/scope, make sure it is level with the plate (install the plate hanging out the front of the stock a bit, put a level on it), and not necessarily the top of your scope base. The goal is to have the POA change only elevation, if that, when sliding the gun back and forth in the bags.

Personaly i like a lighter weight , wider base rest , tripod desgine so i built my own. not real hard to do is you have access to the machines. It has a 12" radius and is as solid as any rest i have seen , use a windage top and post adjustments and the rear sock for fine tuning once your in position. only weighs about 6-lbs

You can be competitive off of a bipod, I have won my share of matches at 600 yards and 1,000 yards shooting my KMW 7WSM off of a bipod. Plus it will give you some time to look at what other folks are using at the matches and figure out what you might want to spend on a rest.

Re: Front rest suggestions fopr open class?

I was competitive from a bipod this year at the US/Canadian match. That being said I would recommend a properly designed stock and rest.

Re: Front rest suggestions fopr open class?

Before you invest in a high dollar front rest, get an Edgewood rear rest and use your Harris or Atlas bipod. I have lost matches to a few guys using this set up.

Re: Front rest suggestions fopr open class?

As noted, SEB (either version) Farley II, Farley Compact or Shadetree tops w/ Sinclair or Hart bases. These 5 or so set ups dominate in Open.

Most of the guys doing very well shooting off bipods are using the Sinclair F-Class, or one similar (cant remember the carbon fiber job or the Canadian MFG names), not too many using Harris or that style. I am talking at the big, National Match, level, not really the club level.

Also as noted in other threads, Sinclair has discontinued their original F style in favor of a new one with elevation adjustment built in. It's supposed to be out in August, and my guess is it will be VERY popular is they keep the cost reasonable.

I would also agree with the post above about going ahead and getting a solid rear bag setup. Makes a huge difference...

Re: Front rest suggestions fopr open class?

I practice with a sand bag I made myself. I used the fishtank gravel that was lying around in the garage. I was supposed to use it on a match last month but it was cancelled due to very high winds. It is very stable and affordable.
