Fundamentals! I had no recall of them. I harvested a caribou last week. I had lots of time for setup. This was my fourth stalk, I passed on three others.

Conditions were great, wind was in my favor. Took a 150yd shot. Good impact right where I aimed. Lungs right behind front quarter. I was at ease, not rushed or amped up. Shot from kneeling position, quite steady in the terrain I was nestled into. I realized right after I fired that I didn’t go thru my “mental fundamental self talk”. It was just automatic, ingrained. At least that’s my hope. Any insights on this?

Since moving to Alaska, I have to admit a lot of things that one time took effort have become so second nature that I don't even notice anymore.

My opinion of what you're saying is that you have reached what's called the "unconscious competence" stage.

Fancy schmancy psychological model (Four Stages of Competence) or learning going thru four stages:

1) unconscious incompetence - you suck and you're too stupid to even know it
2) conscious incompetence - you suck, but now you know it
3) conscious competence - you're good, but it takes careful focus and attention,
4) unconscious competence - you're so good that you do it without thinking, "making it look easy"

Not sure if you're into that sort of thing, but that sure seems like what you're describing. Your fundamentals may be getting to the point where you do it without even realizing it.

Great place to be...

Congrats! Bou is the best tasting game meat on the planet! Don't know about fundamentals, I just hunt.

I am into that sort of thing-never heard this! I posted because I was startled after firing. Startled because shooting targets and steel I consciously review fundamentals and breaking that shot at the caribou I had no fundamental review going on in my head. Startled that I even recognized that too. So I’m still wondering if this is “normal”. Do other shooters notice this too?
