Thanks for posting. Of course Herman's is long gone, and so is Stewarts. All the 3 gas stations are

Even in today's modern times that town remains relatively remote and isolated.
Most citizens in country have never been out west and therefore never experienced vast empty space.
A couple years back I stopped in that town got a haircut and went to the Safeway store and picked up some lunch meat a loaf of bread.

Back in the day did that town like Burns Oregon have its own electric power generation station?
The last time I was in Burns the old power station building was still standing.

Worked at a place that would hang a sign on the men's restroom while it was being cleaned. The sign read:
Do not enter
Female staff present

I asked a female VP to read the sign and her response was "so". Then I said, read it exactly as it is written. The next day the signs had all be rewritten and changed.

Many years ago you could spot the FNGs in the latrine. If Mamasan or Ajumma walked in, they would abruptly leave. Old timers asked how she was doing.

Lakeview had several lumber mills all of which had their own power plants, however power was supplied by a co-op. There was a boondoggle to put a jet fuel plant there (upwind, I might add), but they (the developers) spent all the money and it closed down after building the infrastructure. Supposed to use slash from logging operations but there’s hardly any logging going on anymore, anyway.
It was a lovely town and in some respects still is, with some fine people. Full of meth-trash now, too.
