Oh Shit .......
IMG_0694.jpg

When we adopted my daughter, she was 10. We jumped straight from long time married without children right into pre-teen girl drama LOL.

We went on vacation with my inlaws to Gatlinburg and took a side trip over to Cade’s Cove TN. While there we saw a bunch of cars stopped on the path and I heard the word “bear”. I parked, grabbed Erica and my old D70 and headed to where the people were.

Most had stopped far short of the mama bear and 2 cubs. Mama was tearing into some old log and the cubs were both up trees. Mama wasn’t at all concerned with us humans and I went right past all the crowd and within about 25’ of mama.

I snapped several pics and my 10 year old new daughter right behind me. It was a fairly dark wooded place so I thought “I’ll take one more with the flash”....

When that flash popped, mama bear took a stance like that bear and popped her jaws and pounded her front paws on the ground and then took a false run at me.

I was already in a sprint when I thought “oh crap! Erica!” But as I turned my head she was right beside me LOL.

She is 25 now and still laughs about me leaving her to be eaten by the bear.

Small world, I took the above picture in Cades Cove, Gatlinburg TN. You might recognize some of these and I was using my D20 with a 400 mm lens and far away in the bear pictures ;) :

Small world indeed!

It’s a great story and place to visit. I have lain awake at night wondering what happened to all those people.

Yes, there are a lot of sad stories in the park. Every year we hike to the Walkers sisters farm as you may know; they were the last to leave the park and were there into the 1960s. Many tourist would visit with them and bring them gifts and the Rangers would also deliver medicine, food and other items. This was there home:

By the way thank you for posting some of the most amazing photos I've ever seen !

I get spiders like this last one in my garden. They are huge, and absolutely gorgeous! I have a pic on my camera of the one last year, I think. I will look for it today!
I do not use my Canon as much these last few years as I used to. I used to go out almost daily, and process pictures several days a week. Now, with an almost 9-year old in the house, I just do not have the time.

More from last summer. The '15 BMW R1200RT had a failed big end bearing at 50.7k miles. No warning lights or anything, just lots of racket when it happened. Dealership had never had this happen on any BMW bike and had to order special tools from Germany to split the block in order to have full diagnosis. Best guess was an out of spec bearing. All recommended service intervals were followed and documented, so BMW North America split the cost with me on a new block with crank and pistons (and split labor too) even though it was well out of warranty because this type of failure should never have happened. It took several weeks for them to get everything squared away but I was generally happy with the service received and the outcome. And now I have a 5 yr old bike with basically no miles on it, which is good since I put on about 12-16k a year just commuting. I still want to make some art out of the old parts. I love the mechanical look of the parts and the machining, for mass produced parts, seems to be excellent.

Flyover from Packers vs Bears last December. Went to the game with three of my closest friends: one from high school and USMC, one from college, and the other followed me through the USMC ranks for about 15 years and is about to retire as a 1stSgt. He was my detachment 1stSgt when I was the Det CO. I wouldn't be the man I am today without any of the three. So this shot holds a special spot in my soul because it represents so much to me: home, the three lifelong battle companions that lift each other higher, and the purity of the space in which we occupy.

I did the same. I sold almost all my gear and swore off weddings and even portrait work. People are ... well I just didn’t enjoy it anymore. I loaned my remaining gear to my nephew who against all council is doing wedding and portrait work....He’s good, very good.

I recently decided to just pick up a camera other than an iPhone and I have discovered that the love is back. I need to find a wide for FX, probably a 20mm f/2.8D and I will have all I want.

I feel you. I was doing freelance for a few years. I stopped becaus everyone was so focused on weddings and high demands with not wanting to pay for it. I lost the passion.

I do sell through a stock site, but have not been as active since trying to start my own business, basically. Doing it as a hobby is much more rewarding.
