This car gives me a raging boner every time I see it. Thanks for posting
is that a 1700 yard target? that's some cool steel!!

I’m going for 220-240hp in my 66 VW Bug. At the drawing board to see the most effective and reliable way to get there. Most obvious choice is a motor swapIt takes quite a bit to get 400hp. If I was doing it with someone else’s checkbook I’d shoot for 250-ish hp and some suspension upgrades

most old school guys did the Porsche motor swap with the weber carbs, and don't forget the wheelie bars.I’m going for 220-240hp in my 66 VW Bug. At the drawing board to see the most effective and reliable way to get there. Most obvious choice is a motor swap![]()
Two options in my brainAir cooled Porsche engine swap
Or if you want to go totally bonkers, flat six Subaru engine swap
If I were to v8 swap a bug or have a likeness of it, I’d buy a Stealth Beetle and put an Audi motor in it. Not really the direction I want to go with a bug, but neat as hellmost old school guys did the Porsche motor swap with the weber carbs, and don't forget the wheelie bars.
Or you can get crazy like this guy

I’m not into old bugs so I can’t really be much help other than throwing out some options that I’m aware of. If I was going to explore something like this I’d probably go the EG33 routeTwo options in my brain
1: 2387cc air cooled motor(220hp) with aluminum block. Turbo added later. All in all, around 10k including turbo and required controls. Downside is it is air cooled still
2: Subaru EG33/EJ20 swap. This is most economical, as I can get an import motor for about 1k. Rebuild and add adapter kits for another 2k. Have piece of mind with water cooled reliability and performance.
Subaru swap is closer to a done deal than another air cooled motor for me. I almost bought a motor last night, but wanted to look around some. Have a buddy with a salvage yard, he’s supposed to call me if a suby limps into his possessionI’m not into old bugs so I can’t really be much help other than throwing out some options that I’m aware of. Yeah, but she's so feck'in cute doing it.17:04 (ish) grinddddddd
My god, is this the 1st time she's driven a stick????? The dude has to be cringing listening to his 4K dollar tranny getting wrecked
I saw a motor stunt show where they had put two sport bike engines in a bug and had one slaved to the front axle and one to the rear. It could pop a wheelie in forward OR in reverse.I both love the idea and am completely terrified of a high hp bug. That shit was designed like 100yrs ago. You could get that kind of hp from a n/a 6cyl Subaru engine… and then add a turbo kit to it. You’re talking about 1000hp if you do it right
Set it up for running on E85 and that will help with the cooling immensely. Two options in my brain

Air cooled has come a long ways. Can get blocks already cut for big bore setups, like 94mm pistons and 350 Chevy journals. Air cooled is neat, but in a reliability way, will never be as good as a water cooled motor. Maybe I’m wrong, but in the years I’ve been around bugs and baja setups, that’s my take on it. Guess I need to get busy looking for partsGawd I've built a ton of Type 1's.
2180 used to be the hot setup but you had to cut and weld the block for the stroker crank....and welding magnesium is not a fun thing to do.
I've built and seen ones others have built at 1835 cc with (we used to use) Dynosaur heads, dual 48IDAs, good web cam, etc run well into the 250 horse range n/a running race gas....and thats with a 009 point distributor and not much else fancy.
Granted it's a TV show, but this bug is the real deal (since been sold).

Shoulda seen my mint400 bug I used to play with, sorry no pics left as it was quite some time ago.
It was a whole lot quicker than you could imagine because the power to weight ratio in any old school VW is off the charts.
Used to be a couple of turbo Vdubs at the local dragstrip that were pretty quick. One was a rail buggy with a big blow through Holley carb. He ran street tires and spun to about 330 mark. I asked him why no slicks and he said he tried but couldn’t steer with slicks LOLAir cooled has come a long ways.
