My father wanted to fly a P38 but got put into a B25. He was always disappointed about that.

I was at McGuire AFB when it put up a P-38 as a tribute to Maj McGuire. His widow (and current husband) attended the ceremony. I thought is was a little depressing since the P-38 had flown into the field. Took about a year to get it ready.
One report is that McGuire broke one of his rules and went into a dogfight without jettisoning his wing tanks. And I read that, after the war, Bong became a test pilot and was killed in a crash.
