Question on table saws. It's been a while since I used one but doesn't anyone ever use push sticks anymore?
Can’t speak for others, but I don’t even think about N O T using a push stick. What got me was a board kicking back, thin 3/8” siding for a patch on the side of a small shop.

My neighbor and friend growing up had the anti kick back pawls fail on a saw.
Buggered his trigger finger pretty bad.
He was also my shop teacher and that lesson stuck with me.
Also taught me how to hunt and fish. My dad just wasnt into it, Coach was, and loved having a kid around to teach.

He is 83 and hunts and fishes more than anyone I know.

No free loading.
This is him, summer 2017. 8 lb Kenai salmon on the line and answers his dang phone!!!

A guy I know who works for my buddy Dean (home improvement contractor) lost a finger last year to the hungry table saw.

I am an absolute surgeon with the TS and MS but I never forget that they want me to F up.

Those new saws that stop instantly if flesh touches the blade are the hotness.

Buddy has a saw stop at his cabinet shop. Works great when it works but his was full of problems. Ultimately removed it.

I have to look for the post-op photos. My dad was at the Hobby Shop at EdwardsAFB, while he was on the X-15 project. He got several of his right hand fingers nearly cut off due to the plywood he was cutting starting to move away from the fence. he slipped and BRRT!, blood everywhere.
Mom and I were called to the Er at the hospital (if you've been there, it's on the hill overlooking the housing area). He was lying there with his hand on a draped Mayo stand, with white towels all over, and a bowl of betadine, which the RN had just used to clean up the mess.
Two officers in Dress Uniform walked in, spoke to my mom, and I, "We are Col xxxx and Col XXX (I don't remember their names). We just completed a rotation in Germany with a Hand Institute. We were just touring the hospital to get the lay of the land before we begin a tour in Aerospace medicine. We've looked at your husband's hand, and I think we can save all of his fingers, with some techniques we learned over the last two years. I also think we have everything we need."
They excused themselves, and went to the elevator at the end of the hall. A lady friend came to pick us kids up, and mom stayed there. The next day we went by StaffCar, back to the hospital. Dad was all trussed up with wires and splints, and heavily wrapped up in gauze, and deep into pain-med city.
He kept all his fingers, and stayed in the AF till he retired. 1960.

After a few incidents, my Dad finally bought a Saw Stop. But he doesn't do as much in his shop as he used to. One thing about Saw Stops is that the wood can't be too green or wet (like some treated lumber for example) Wet wood can trigger the safety on it as if it's a finger.

I have a regular TS and use push sticks all the time. My rule of thumb (pun intended?) is my fingers don't get closer than the throat plate. One of the biggest problems is bad wood or trying to cut things that are too small. Shops are dangerous and you have to know what you're doing and use the right tool for the job.

My good friend almost lost a finger on the table saw in wood shop in 9th grade. We managed to get him out and the mess cleaned up without the teacher knowing. The teacher was pretty awful though and pretty much turned us loose in the shop while he sat in the office. We shot nails into the ceiling insulation a lot too. Good times.

Yeah, and then they moved the lift and put someone else in the spray (there's a longer video out there) a couple of times, so multiple people got the car wash treatement. Seems like someone ran into a pipe sticking out of the ground for the snowmaking and broke it off. How they didn't get hurt is a mystery to me. Happened at Beech Mtn in NC. I'm sure lawsuits will be coming
