hello everyone, im new here and would like your opinion on a future build. as of rite now i have a rem. 700 .243 that i want to rebuild into a predator rifle. i have a couple questions concerning my ideas. is there such a thing as a match grade bull barrel?, im looking into 105 gr. amax bullets, would a 1:8 twist be good for stabilizing this bullet or would 1:7 be better? i am looking at a mcmillan a-5 stock and need to know if they have aluminum pillers? also, what would it take to change from a bdl action into a dbm with ai 10 rd mags? im planning on gtlass bedding and truing the action, having the original trigger weight reduced down to 1-1.5lbs. what else could you recommend for getting better accuracy? im thinking about getting into reloading but ive never done it so im gonna start out with factory loads and try a few and see what kind of results i can get.also i should note that ive owned my .243 for about 15yrs and im pretty sure the factory barrel is wore out. i can still get "decent groups" 1moa to 3/4 moa but i know this gun is capable of far more than that, so what else would you recommend to me for accuracy enhancements?

Re: future build questions

Welcome,

Barrel-Yes there is a bull barrel, but we go by contours here. There are many types of contours, but if you want it for a predator rifle I'd say go lighter contour. 1-7.5 is what most people prefer to throw the larger pills a 1-8 will do you fine also.

Stock-Mcmillan does offer pillars and can be put in for you. All it would take to change from an BDL to mag system would be buying a Mcmillan with an inlet for a DBM of your choice.

Trigger- Personally for a strictly hunting rifle I'd say that 2lbs is as light as I'd go with a trigger.

For more accuracy "enhancements" work on the driver after this is all done. Also a good quality scope can be a help too.

</div></div>thank you for your input on this, im not sure what contour would be best for predator hunting [varmint contour maybe?] im also wanting to do 5r rifling. i do have a leupold 3.5-10x 50 vx111 sittin on top of the .243 right now, which should be more than good enough for longer range shooting.

Use the SEARCH function Grasshopper!

You have several days of solid reading ahead of you. The questions you have asked are already recorded with informative answers in the SH archives.

If you persist, prepare yourself.......

Re: future build questions

You could go with a varmint profile, but if you're going to be humpin' it, maybe something lighter, like a sporter med. sporter contour.

+1 for pink's response....the Mcmillan can be ordered for the bottom metal you want, and the pillars

K41 is correct. There is a great deal of information about the subjects you are asking about. Even in the last 4-6 weeks there have been a number of posts with good discussions about new builds for hunting/long range shooting.

Try some search words/phrases searching the subject like:
combo
tactical hunter
first build
new build
noobie (or maybe newbie - spelling may matter)

Also check out these two links about combo rifles that are not using heavy/bull barrels. I do not think you need to have a bull barrel to have accuracy... These rifles are not in .243 caliber but the same concepts apply

I think you will find some good posts.
