I almost feel like I still need one to throw the first charge to set the target weight on fx120i

Keep a few primed cases plugged with an upside down bullet filled with the charge weights you use most.

It takes me about 45 seconds to get it set. 2=20 gr, 3=40, 4=50 on the throws drum and set it a couple grains short. Then just spin the trickler.

I had one of the first auto trickler systems, I sold it. I'm going off friends that have the whole system, CM is quick and easy, so they keep one.

I set a low charge on the chargemaster they get the precise drop on the FX-120. I have the auto powder drop but dont use it. To me its more of a hassle to set it up with the powder I want, get the charge set, etc. I probably use 5-6 different powders on a regular basis so I try to limit my setup time. I do use the auto-trickler for the final powder drop though.

I had the first version that you retro fitted a trickler to.
I always used the cheap scoops to get close even though I own a thrower.
The new one version looks pretty sweet.

I have the newest version with the auto throw and auto trickle. Its still a pain to set the target weight each time.

Keep you some vials with snap caps. Keep your load weight for each gun in one. Use them to tare the scale before loading.

I was checking out accurate shooters forum and someone over there is shaving down bullets to his exact powder charges and using those to set the target weight on the scale.
Thoughts on that?

Then I manually dump a charge from it, and take a powder scoop to trickle up to desired weight and set it. It takes like 40 seconds in total. Then the auto throw and auto trickler do everything from there. If I’m doing load dev, I just start at the lowest charge, then on the next I’ll manually trickle the auto trickler by hand to throw .2 more after it hits the target weight, reset the target weight, and repeat. It’s maybe 10 seconds per charge slower than when I used two chargemasters.

I do the same if working up a velocity ladder. Throw/trickle low and manually run the wheel on the trickler to get to the next weight.

I got rid of my Chargemaster when I switched, but I got the kit with the Auto Throw and Auto Trickler. 10'ish seconds to throw a charge within 1 grain of powder. Even if you're doing a ladder test, simply trickle up the .2-.3 grain target.

It is infinitely better than the RCBS, and there is no need to have both. I'd also recommend the Area 419 upgrades as a huge improvement.

How is it hard to set the target weight?

1. Fill the hopper and the trickler with powder.
2. Manually run the thrower which should throw about 1-1.5gr lower than your target unless you were loading for something else and changed it. If you did, do this a few times dumping the charge back into the hopper after it each one until you have it where you want.
3. Spin the trickler manually until the desired charge weight is in the pan.
4. Press the button to set it.

Viola.

It should take no more than a minute to do this, maybe 2 minutes if you have to readjust the thrower too. If you think you're just going to punch in a charge to chargemaster and it throw accurately and not have to make fine adjustments once you put it in the autothrower then you're crazy.

Whatever charge you are using one of these scoops will be able to get you pretty close.

Have a bowl of powder. Put on your tray, powder dispenses out of the trickler, use your scoop of powder to get you close, trickler finishes it off. Works flawlessly. Takes just a few seconds for each charge. No thrower needed. If you poured out too much powder in your bowl, pour it back in the powder jug after.

I have both, the rcbs still is a decent scale and if I need to run a 2nd powder for some reason.

I use screw cap Vials to store my loads to set the auto trickler. Plus I can verify the calibration.

I have a chargemaster I'll take out to the range and plug into my truck to load develop. Once it's close with the chargemaster I'll go home and use my fx to dial it in. I have both the trickler and throw. I live the set up and it's easy to change throw weights. I didn't think of having common loads set aside... i'm going ti have to start doing that.

Another quick tip. If anyone has vibration or perfect return to zero when removing the pan in between charges. Get a piece of granite/quartz and some anti vibration pads. I work for a countertop fabricator, so getting a piece was easy. But if you go to lowes, home depot, any kitchen/bath store, or a local fabricator, they will get you a piece.

Also, these pads from amazon work well. They have an adhesive side to stick to your bench or top/bottom of your base.
