GA Precision M40a5

Hey guys, new to this forum and I hope I came to the right place. I'm considering buying my first precision rifle. This all started when I sold my Remington 700 AAC-SD to a friend of mine. It was a good rifle but I wanted an upgrade. I wanted something a little better, like the Remington 700p or something comparable. As I was searching the web for rifles, I came across GA Precision M40a5 and I've always loved their rifles. It cost A LOT more money than a Rem 700p but the quality is unmatched. I've seen GAP's M40a5 several years ago but never have I ever thought I'd be considering buying one but is it worth the money? The quality and the history of owning one of these rifles is it worth the cost? GAP wants $4,470 for the M40a5 (http://www.gaprecision.net/mil-spec-rifles/m40a5.html). The most I ever spent on a rifle $1,800 for my M1a. I've been tossing this idea in my head for weeks now, Some input would be greatly appreciated

1. Are you a brand snob like me 2. Are there cheaper ways to get a straight shooting rifle? Yes. With that being said I am waiting on my second GAP to arrive. But be fore warned the wait is long. At the end you will have a gun that will likely shoot better than you cause mine does.

I personally wouldn't do it. I used to want a GAP Rock really, really bad but I realized that my money would be better spent on an AI so that is what I bought and I don't regret it at all.

I had it in 3 days and have been nothing but thrilled with it.

I am sending you a message for a smoking deal on a rifle for 30% less than the GAP.

What about the GAP M40a5 do you want/like? In all reality, you can buy a quality barreled action, slap it in a stock, pick the optic of your choice, and you will be just under or over the price of the GAP depending on your optic choice. If you feel the GAP work will give you a competitive edge, you can't put a price on that. The fact that you said "first precision rifle" means I would go the cheaper route this time and put the savings into extra ammo and range time.

Sierracharlie338, I'm not really a brand snob but I know that GAP makes great rifles. I came across another company C&H precision (https://chpws.com/m40a-rifles-for-sale/) for a little less but not as reputable. They also have a gun smith from the USMC with a 2112 MOS. They have a 10-14 week lead time on their rifles but I would feel more comfortable with GAP.

jlficken, I'll take a look at your message. Thanks for your input. What really draws me to the M40a5 is the history. I’m a history buff and having that rifle in my collect would be really nice.

SRPowah - Reason why I like the GAP M40a5 is because of the quality of it. Plus the history behind the M40a5. It'll be an American classic and since I'm a history buff, why not get one. Yes, it'll be my first but I don't like to buy things twice. If I’m going to buy something it’s going to be one and done. It’ll be a rifle that I will take out and it’ll last for years to come.

tennturk - yeah, I saw their rifles. They're a bit cheaper than GAP but the reputation that GAP has, I wouldn’t mind spending an extra $115.


I know what I want, my biggest hurtle is spending that money.

I can understand why you want the M40A5 if you are wanting it more for the history of it.

I personally just don't know that I could spend that much $$ on any rifle based off of a R700 action but I am not in it for the history aspect.

GAP has a former USMC armorer (he was my recruiter) and I believe he has his hands in or builds their M40's.

No they don't. Dave Clarke left. Ask C&H who is building their rifles now that Dave is gone. Hopefully not Buck. They have a habit of "stretching" the truth a bit. They downright lied to me on my last build. "We test fire 10 rounds"
Really? Then how come the fact that my bolt didnt extract cross your mind?
Then send it back, and then charge me another $180 to tell me that? You have a 2112, how come he just didn't put calipers on the bolt face?

"The rifle has a Schneider barrel. I mean a Hart Barrel. Oh, maybe a Schneider.... no, it's Hart". WTF, can't keep your bullshit straight?
I'm done with them, and I spent a lot of money with them.

If you truly know what your application is for your new rifle then you should be able to spend much less money on a 700 based rifle that will do a better job for you (being that it will be custom tailored to your needs) but with the same quality. I have nothing against a GAP build, I have owned many of them now including a M40A5. But the M40A5 was designed for a specific use but with limitations put on the design, meaning that it does not take advantage of some of the advancements available today. But with that said if you just want one, I cant argue that at all...

If nostalgia is what you seek get a m40a5. Twomanattack on here is the king of the m40 guns. If you want a rifle to shoot look elsewhere. GAP is not worth the wait IMHO.

I do not recommend CH Precision. I had my A5 built by them and came back with consistent feeding issues. So much for quality control... not that you’ll get berated from the owner for calling him out on his product. Ultimately, I sent it back which they then fixed. My buddy had 338 (built by CH) chamber closed on a no go gauge.
