"MH" and the last 4 digits of the serial number?
No emblem stamp, just the initials.
Would it be Matt Hoch, Mark Hall, or somebody else?

Yes it's a full build.
No stamp, just "MH" and the last 4 digits of the SN from the receiver.

They dont stamp Mil spec builds. I just picked up a newer barreled action in a aics stock. I asked George a few weeks ago when I was there why it did not have a stamp. He said they are not stamping any more barreled actions if they dont bed the stock...

There was an issue of incorrect markings being engraved on an entire run of hospitallers, barrel tenons were turned and remarked, apparently makers mark was not re-applied. this is an oversight.

I asked him while the gun was being built and he said Bill Tompkins.
I figured if he didn't know who was working on it while it was right in front of him in the shop, there wasn't a snowball's chance in Hell that he would get it right a year and a half later.

I had no issues whatsoever with the original question. However, it seemed to me that the sarcasm in the reply I highlighted in red was hacking on Ken for not dropping whatever he might have been doing at the moment to answer a question posted in a Thread at Sniper's Hide. Upon re-reading it, it still seems that way to me.

Bottom line is, those guys are BUSY. They produce thousands of rifles every year. It may take a day or two before they can get back to a customer. However, I've never had Ken or anyone else there fail to respond to an inquiry I made. So I was merely pointing out that perhaps the most expedient and definitive way to answer a question about a GA Precision rifle would be to call or e-mail GA Precision, rather than post it online in a shooting forum, where in a case like this, it's difficult to know for sure whether the answers you receive are the correct ones. Seriously, if you can't get a definitive answer from the manufacturer of the rifle, why would you think an answer posted here would be more informative?

Yes, I know they're busy. That's why I didn't send an email or call because I wasn't going to waste their time with a question they probably couldn't answer.

Very simple.
Because there are a lot of folks on here that have GAP rifles, and it's the ONLY place to ask since I "can't get a definitive answer from the manufacturer of the rifle".

We have 200-500+ rifle builds working their way through our shop at any given time in the year--so you are correct that I cant keep track of them all. If I told you that a build was on Bill Tompkins bench when you called, then it was.

It is the prerogative of George, production manager and gunsmiths to determine whether to redistribute orders to our smiths that need work.

That said, I did look up your builds and the 260 was barreled by Matt Hoch, your 7 was done by Bill Tompkins.

I appreciate you taking the time to look up the info and answer my question.
Like I already said, I didn't contact you directly because I didn't want to waste your time on such an unimportant question. The only reason I posted the question in the first place is because I took the action out of the stock a couple of days ago for the first time to change the trigger, and I noticed the initials didn't match what you told me in a telephone conversation while the rifle was being built. I would not have asked you to go back through records from a year and a half ago.
It doesn't matter to me who built the rifle. It has been a tack driver from day one, and I have been 110% satisfied with it since the day it arrived. I figured it was built by Matt or Mark when I saw the initials and I just curious as to which one it was.

I apologize for things getting sidetracked, but some folks just feel compelled to post replies and commentary in threads when they have absolutely nothing beneficial to add.
It's a character flaw on my part that I feel compelled to reply.

according to the info on GAP's site, the bull's head is the stamp of Ray Lawler.

when you guys order from GAP do you request a certain smith? does the quality of the gun leaving that shop differ that much pending who assembled it? WHY is this such a huge issue? i could care less if every guy in that shop does a thread a piece on my freaking gun, i go there because of the consistent work that leaves it. You guys realize even in the custom 1911 world most 1911 smiths have guys who help at the shop that might fit half the parts on the gun right? if the gun doesn't run or shoot GAP will make it right. if it shoots fine and runs fine and does what you want... carry on and enjoy it.

The only thing i request is that kenny blesses all of my guns with a sacrificial pig slaughter and roast.. and a dance by george in a loin cloth around a fire... but thats just me.

I am with you on this one. I almost think this is the biggest indication of a "tire kicker" when this question comes up on a GA Precision rifle being sold on the forum.

to me it would be like asking which person on the assembly line built the Ford in your driveway

Nope, I don't.
I never knew anybody personally at GAP when I ordered my rifles, and I still don't know anybody there.
I've read enough here to know that the folks that order enough rifles from GAP seem to be able to ask for a particular smith to build their guns. I've never felt a need to do that, and I couldn't afford enough rifles to qualify if I ever did feel the need.
It's not easy for me to buy a nice rifle, but I like them and I make a lot of sacrifices so that I can.

I can't imagine that it would.
GAP is known as one of the very best precision rifle manufacturers in the entire world.
George runs the place, and I'm sure if he felt any of the smiths that work for him couldn't maintain that reputation with every single rifle that leaves their respective benches he'd send them down the road talking to themselves.

It wasn't a huge issue for me. It was a simple question.
There was a bunch of folks that read something else into my simple question and made it into a huge issue. I don't care who built my rifle. It has shot great from day one. I am totally 100% satisfied with it, regardless of who chambered, bedded, or finished it. If I was concerned about who built it I would have jerked it out of the stock the day it was delivered 18 months ago to see who built it, and then I would have told everybody that I had a "Moon Laser", or one of the other terms I see here all the time.
As I said, I took it out of the stock a few days ago to change the trigger. I saw the "MH", absent the usual symbol stamp, and I was wondering which of the 2 guys with those initials had worked on it.
No more, no less.

Yep, I know that to be a fact.
On my very first trip to the range, my second GAP rifle wouldn't feed from the magazine because somebody had forgotten to cut the slot in the feed ramp to allow the rounds to come up from the magazine.
Ken sent me a Fed Ex pre-paid shipping label and I sent it back.
Yep, I was pretty disappointed that such a simple thing was overlooked after I waited several months for the rifle, but I had it back in about 10 days with the problem corrected.

So that's about the best I can explain my original question.
If you and all of the other folks on here feel that you need to continue to bash me for my "insult" to GAP, go right ahead.

I'm done explaining myself.

well said, i have three GAP's coming and 3 in my safe. George and crew offer amazing top shelf service and product. They are what they are for the service provided after the fact and the consistancy of the rifles they produce. When either of those things change then i'll stop supporting them, but i do not see that happening as long as george is alive.

well actually i have had my hospitaller for almost 2 years noe so im not sure what ken is talking about or if it pertains to my rifle as the original response i got from ken previously was that no markings meant it was made by their lead gunsmith??? i think whoever built it just plain forgot to put a mark on it wich is kinda strange but i guess knowing who built your rifle is a charge above and beyond the cost of the build. it would just be nice if i ever sold it to be able to list it as bing built by x-person , im sure all those people who bought m40 builds built by eric reid are sure glad they can put that into the for sale thread when they try to sell it. as for remarking it thanks for the offer but when its time for a rebarrel its going to gradious
