Gap-10...Cleaning supplies questions

OK...My Gap-10 is scheduled to arrive this week. This is my first ever semi rifle. I was browsing the sinclair website today looking at cleaning supplies. Can you all help point to some good to have products that will make life easier when it comes time to clean a AR-10. I saw different bore guides, a link that holds the upper connected to the lower while partially open. Are these parts necessary or just a gimmick. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. What do you all use to hold the rifle in place while while scrubbing bore?

Bore guide + stainless steel 1 piece rod, cloth patches and hoppes 9 is what I use for the barrel. For the chamber I have a chamber brush but usually use a pistol cleaning rod and large patches.

Unless a barrel is hopelessly copper fouled and the bullets are going sideways I don't use a brush on it.

Not sure about a device to hold the upper open. I'll either separate upper and lower totally or pull the rear pin, pivot it open and lay it on its side on a table.

Bore guide is a must, you will also want to get some small brushes for the BCG, I use brass brushes to get the fouling off. Do not scrub the firing pin, just wipe it off.
A .45 cal brush works well for the chamber. Use a fiberglass rod when cleaning the bore. I use Pro Shot solvent and it works great.

JP boreguide and dewey rod with hoppes 9. Jag and patch until clean. Very light coat of oil through barrel as last patch. Generous amout of oil on the BCG. Dab of grease on all the contact points of the fire control group. YMMV

Follow the instructions on the GA Precision website, they should come with your rifle as well. If your rifle is as tight as mine, you'll need a brass punch and hammer to loosen the rear take down pin. I lay my gun on a roll of duct tape while doing this.

I like using a Hoppe's bore snake while at the range.

Thanks for the replies so far. What length one piece rods are you guys using? My barrel length is 18.5" then the length of the bore guide need be accounted for.

I'm still trying to decide on an AR 10. Wanted a .308 but many have suggested a 260 Rem. Think that's where I am headed. Trying to decide between a GAP AR or one from Accuracy Systems. I know GAP uses Bartlein Barrels and I have a bolt gun with a Bartlein that just plain shoots! Accuracy says they use their own barrels but I have'nt heard anything about their barrels. Soooooooo, is it GAP AR 10 or Accuracy Systems ??? Need help

Possum Hollow for the bore guide and make sure to ask for the solvent port. I called them direct and they knew exactly what I needed for my GAP-10. Cleaning solution, Boretech Eliminator is awesome for taking care of the copper fouling and will not harm your barrel. Boretech.com has it and rods, jags, brushes, and patches. Been pleased as punch with this combination on my rig.

Ive got a Carbon Fiber one piece rod, Possom Hollow bore guide, and Im using SWEETS 7.62 to clean the copper out.

Iosso makes some great products including brushes. They sell a brush set for AR10/15, https://www.riflesonly.com/pro-shop/cleaning-kit/ar-br.html

I use their Bore Cleaner and Eliminator Gun Oil in mine and it works great. HTH.

Boretech's Eliminator has done an excellent job of cleaning copper out of my guns. I run it through a. 300wby that I always used Sweets in and i saw a little more come out with Eliminator. As far as snake or rod, there are a shitload of people around here who can answer that. Buying my GAP-10 was a major chunk of change for me so I try to keep as a whistle.

Uhh...It's exactly what the manufacturer of a $3,000 rifle recommends. I'll tell you what, you two can do what you all want with your rigs but please allow others to do as they please. I dont think any of the derogatory comments were meant directly tword you or you opinion. They just mean you are wasting your time and effort for nothing. When you buy 20 or 30 of these rifles they dont really mean anything anymore they just become tools or decorations. A small percentage on this site actually use their weapons for comps, work and recreational shooting. I would suspect that manufactures put out these bulletins just to make people feel better.

Barrel break in is something of a fad. It won't hurt your rifle but it's not really necessary.

There have been lots of great suggestions here. The riflesonly.com pro shop has some good stuff in it. My personal taste is to keep it simple - rod, patches, hoppes 9, boreguide and some sort of synthetic oil lube or light amount of grease.

Don't get butthurt at the people posting up smartass remarks either. For all you know they might be GAP10 owners themselves lol...

I'm certainly not looking for someone to pat me on my back and tell me its ok and then proceed to inform me of their own interpratation of a comment made. I stand behind what I said. While this is somewhat funny, its blatantly stupid. Barrel breakin may not be as use full on a match barrel like a Bartlein chambered by GAP. But I would do it on a factory barrel like a Remington in a heart beat. Most of the throats could use the fire lapping by de-coppering after each shot. As most factory barrels I've seen look like hammered shit via bore scope with jacked up chambers. I recently broke in a new Noveske stainless barrel as per their recommendation. And as expected, fouling began to significantly deminish within 3-4 shots. Shoot one clean one for the those shots. That's what happens when you buy quality. Factory Remington 700 5R took a little over 75 rounds before it stopped heavy fouling. I did the M24 breakin procedure on this rifle. The M24 break in according to Remington is 100 round. I thought that was crazy and excessive but I could see why, as it took 75 rounds to KO most of the fouling. Also took over 500 rounds before it would stop holding copper like no tommorrow. The difference in a fine hand lapped barrel and hammered shit is obvious.

Op: buy a good rod like Dewey or a Tipton. I use KG 1,2,12,and 4 on my gear. Use a possum hollow bore guide. I find the bore guide sticks out far enough to keep the upper and lower separated while I'm rodding out the barrel. I use nylon brushes on stainless. I let the chemicals due the work. No sense in scrubbing the shit out of the crown with a metal brush...bronze or not it's metal and ain't going in a stainless barrel that I care about or expect it to shoot .3 moa or better for long. I use the KG products on butches patches with a pointed jag and wrap them around a Parker Hale jag for the best and safest results.

I got back into riflery 3 years when I bought a Garand I saw sitting in a local shop that spoke to me. It was soon joined by two 03's and I just ordered an LMT MWS with expected arrival in June. I'm looking forward to having a rifle with a receiver less than 70 years old.

I just recently reached a zen like peace regards my rifle cleaning. I was obsessing and worrying about how clean the bores had to be and cleaning was a chore. Brush than patch and worry if the brush was scratching my old original GI bores. I actually regretted shooting the clean rifle because I knew I would have to clean it again.

My new cleaning plan calls for only patches and Hoppes 9. When I get home from the range I throw the rifle in the cradle and pull 3 patches soaked with Hoppes from chamber to muzzle. Later that night I pull 3 more soaked patches. The next morning 3 patches, that night 3 Hopped patches. Ditto the next day. After 3 days, about 12-15 patches, +/- 72 hours of letting the Hoppes do its work and a cumulative 15 minutes of my time the patches come out without any blue staining and a barely discernible gray staining that I can live with.

I use Dewey coated rods and sinclair/Possum Hollow bore guides. I really like my Tipton "Best Gun Vice" cleaning cradle. My new cleaning mindset makes shooting way more enjoyable, my mind is at ease that I am not "hurting" my rifle. Its probably not as good as some other solutions but it is probably better than what many others do. It makes me happy.

When I get my new rifle I'll read LMT's directions regards break in but right now my intent is to not do anything special. When I was into my Harley Davidson phase (having kids ended that, the bike sits for now and has been replaced with my rifle/pistol obsession - I think manly pursuits are a substitute for my rather pathetic Irish equipment) I followed the debates regarding new engine break in. The debate is similar to barrel break in - the "Baby It" school of thought vs the "Ride it Like You Stole It" group. What I observed was that babied bikes and hard ridden bikes both had their share of problems. The riders ability to know his machine and do his own wrenching usually had more to do with a bike being dependable than what type of breakin or motor oil he used. I assume the same with rifles.

Some folks get off on the spotless cleaning of firearms, others just like to shoot the crap out of them. I never use anything beyond a boresnake and Hoppes #9 in any of my AR's. I just don't friggen care. When my GAP-10 arrives later this week I won't treat it any different unless I start to see major issues with accuracy, but I don't punch much paper so I doubt I will.

Even though the original question was a GAP cleaning kit...I like the kit that I put together over the many years for my LMT's, MWS, pistols and shotguns.

I have come to like the Slip line of cleaning products and have been using Wilson Combat lubes for many years now with great success.

As far as cleaning rods, I like the Tipton line and also use Pro-Shooters take down SS rods.

77 Bronc very nice, this is the way to work efficiently. Kind of big but if you dont mind hoisting it around and have the space for it, its ideal.

Do you resent it when other family members want to use your Brother label maker?

I'm guessing your sock drawer is covered and aligned.
