Update

went out yesterday to tweak and test a few loads. It was drizzly rain all day, targets didnt look too impressive cause the paper was splattering the holes due to being soggy. It wasnt till I got home and took the paper targets off that the cardboard revieled a better story.

I was tinkering with 2 seperate powder charges and sub loads tinkering seating depths. Was at 100 yards, just for chrony and tinkering purposes. This combo here looks promising. there are 10 rounds in this cluster

Load-
162 AMAX seated to 2.380 ogive (note .380 on target)(lands start at 2.388 in my gun)
58.8 grains H4831SC 10 rounds running 2,900 fps even
WIN Brass
FGMM primer

this is a prime example that the targets at 100 yards really dont mean shit. As seen above I found a sweet zone at the 100 yard range using 58.8 grs of H4831 SC. A group of 55.5 grs recommended by Turbo on here shot damn tight as well so I kept that in mind. I went out to my F in Laws land this weekend to test them against each other at 300, 600 and furthest I can get on that land at 725 yards.

long story short the slower 55.5 gr load spanked the faster 58.8's ass at all ranges.

55.5 gr- 2800 ish FPS or just shy
58.8 gr- 2900 FPS

the best i could get out of the 58.8 at 725 was a 7 inch group. The pic below is 3 rounds of the 55.5 a 725 yards. the 2 bottom rounds are almost exactly an inch apart with the high left round 2.4 inches from the bottom round. For reference the "X" ring on that NRA bullseye target is 10 inches across(group was shot by my buddy shown below, I was repeating 3 inch groups, never thought to get a pic till he shot the last 3 rounds I had)

Looking good.

Particularly with shortish (for 284) barrels, give H4350 a whirl too. Say ~52gr with 162. Should handle more, but 52 will be safe. I think it'll go faster than 2800 accurately with H4350.

With mine I found the best accuracy with H4350 at 2760. I was able to get a touch more speed but accuracy quickly fell off. 4831sc wasn't the powder for mine.

VJ, Have just finished the almost exact same rifle.

700 LA trued
mike rock barrel, 5 heavy flutes,5R, 8.7 twist, 26in.,APA brake
surgeon BM
bolt knob and bolt fluting by Kamfield customs
Timney straight trigger
Manners T3
Nightforce rail
IOR 3.5x18x42 scope (great scope,have four of them)
Badger bipod rail and atlas bipod

I have just finished this rifle and is not painted yet. I worked with RL-17. Settled on a load of 52.5 for a 5 shot average of 3011fps. Went to 54.5 at 3148fps before it started to get sticky. COAL is 3.165 with 162 A Max with custom reamer set up for the 162 in a long action. Did not have time to try other powders.

Returned from New Mexico Tuesday where I was able to shoot my antelope at 560yds with a first shot kill.

I am really impressed with this setup. Recoils like a 243 at most.

Going to spend some time with other powders, interested in trying Hybrid 100.

Here are some pics. My camera tends to show a bit of a redish pinkish hue when near those bricks, but that is an anomoly. I will try to get some pics in a different setting soon, but this should suffice to give an idea of what it looks like. Everything done in cerakote.

I've been thinking of a "do it all" rifle like this. I keep wanting a 7WSM, but seems like the AI mags need some fixin to run.

I guess a .284 being a long action would fix that issue.

Nice rifle, you've definitely giving me something to think about.

Turns out the house back home where my secret safe is stached had some flooding in the basement after a few days of relentless rain. Reports are this rifle lifted all the other rifles to safety, even the little bieber trouble maker. After getting all the old wood stocked old codgers safe it held up the others out of the water until help arrived, this rifle is a true hero.

Goin through pics and vids on my phone and figgered I'd throw this up here. It sounds a little loud in the video but keep in mind the volume of the bolt chamberong a round in comparison to the round going off
