I just had my GAP Tempest action chambered by a reputable gunsmith, and began my completing my build. I noticed 2 things while chambering some rounds:
1. 50% of the cases have some pretty knarly dents at the shoulder
2. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the breach ring is loose. If I reach up through the magazine feed opening, the breach ring is rattling loose and i can shift it forward/back with my finger about 1/32". The barrel itself is not loose/unscrewing from the action.

This is my first custom action, but i'm 99% sure its unsafe to fire with a loose breach ring...i'm just glad i caught it in time before first firing. Do I have any other options besides sending it back to my gunsmith for another go at it?

Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure the breech ring should be pinched by the end of the barrel. Call gap to make sure. You should call the smith as well and ask about it. Maybe he was unaware of the relationship between the barrel and ring. If he's capable of fitting and chambering any barrel, he should be capable of fixing it.

On my GA tempest thread drawing, it gives a thread tenon length as .949-.950.

on actions with the breeching ring the barrel is torqued against both the revicer face and the breeching ring face at the same time, this may be your smiths first time barreling an action like this and he treated it like a remington that is only torqued against the reciver face/recoil lug.

Make sure your smiths measures from the bolt nose to the face of the action with the beach ring in. A slight (~ +\- .005") bolt nose recess may need to be cut into the barrel. Mine needed a slight recess and i didn't notice it...
