GAP/Thunder Ranch rifle, anyone have one yet??

Just wondering if any of you have one of these yet or if they have even made one yet that has left the shop. The more and more I look at this rifle, the more I like it. I am trying to compare it to the Crusader and they both appear to be the same rifle except for the stocks and maybe the crusader's barrel is a bit longer per the descriptions.

Anyone have any other pics of these new GAP/TR rifles other than the ones on the website? I dont know just how new this is yet but I am really liking it and wondering if any of you guys have one yet, how do you like it? Thanks E1*

I do not have one but im guessing that it is well worth the money because it is not only another flawless GAP rifle but it was desighned to spec by Clint Smith +1 very nice rifle.

Interesting; a GAP build with the mini-chassis. It doesn't state that it is glass bedded, but then again they have a Templar action in it.

I have the same config stock on order with Manners (due any day now I think) except an Atlas rail instead of the single stud. The one in those pics looks sexy.

The mini-chassis is advertised as a "drop in" solution. Some people bed the AICS. I think the jury is out as to whether those types of systems would benefit from bedding. Opinions vary...

Very sharp rifle. Anyone have a weight on one of these as it sets in the standard 308win form? The 22" barrel and contour look to maybe keep the weight reasonable.

I have been a fan of the GAP Rock (for size and being a do-all rifle) since seeing it in the late 90's on SC and the GAP TR looks to be a step forward.

Don't know for sure but seems like they would skim bed it for that perfect fit. I would love to know the answer because I'm about to order a Mannners T4-A w/ Chassis and I'm wondering how they do it over at GAP.

Todd, I got the notice email that you responded to this thread where you responded that he got an early one and it is sweet. (I dont know why it is not posted on this thread)!

I do attend to agree with you on this but I know that if GAP is just using the Manners system and garanteeing the 3/8 moa with match ammo then they know that it will do it. It still astonishes me if they are getting those results with an unbedded rifle. But I guess AICS rifles have been doing it for years...

C'mon guys, I know someone has to have one of these rifles to show us?????

We were just commenting that a well known builder of custom precision rifles is advertising a rifle, specced by a well known firearm instructor, with the chassis without any mention of bedding and a 3/8 MOA accuracy guarantee. This certainly is not conclusive evidence that the chassis does NOT benefit from bedding. Just food for thought, and perhaps evidence that the jury is indeed out.

Maybe they are skim bedding them and not mentioning it in the description? I doubt it as the GAP price list structure has a price for bedding an AICS. The labor for such a task would affect the price of the TR rifle and thus would likely be listed in the TR rifle description.

Of course, as you noted, not all actions are created equal, and the TR rifle is advertised with a custom action in it (not a trued 700).

I understand all that. I have shot with the mini chassis unbedded and it made my accuracy no worse then in a bedded fiberglass stock. But I think since we are talking accuracy here.... would it not be best to go ahead with a skim bedding into the chassis and ensure 100% fitment and security in an already expensive investment. If I am going to pay that much for a fine piece of kit then I want the best accuracy, leading me to believe the bedding into the chassis for my custom action is warranted. Im just saying, if your going to drop the coin, do it right. Is it crucial to bed, no not really, but I want the accuracy the barreled action is capable of. So I believe skim bedding the chassis systems is the way to go if you can.

I've looked it over on the GAP web site. I like the specs and would say it is everything I would look for in any build. The price does not seem bad either.
As for the Mini Chassis, I have a T5A with one but have yet to use it on a build. I think the bedding, as described by KLin above, in a good idea but I plan on a full skim bed for mine.

Skim bedding will do nothing for a Mini Chassis. The action sits in the chassis via a V type block thats ground. It makes linier contact with both sides of the action for the whole length just like an AICS. Bedding will not change this unless you float the action above the chassis which defeats the purpose. We are bedding the lug only on these just to strengthen the bond in that area. The rifles shoot just like a GAP should. Clint and Heidi report 1" 300 yard groups, and 2" or at 500. thats with rifle #1 and its not bedded at all.

While I personally don't think that bedding a chassis will net you significant gains, I do think that skim bedding will provide a better surface than the v-block. I realize there's a difference between theoretical and practical but if it were true that a v type block chassis would not benefit from skim bedding, then why even offer it?

George, thanks for explaining this to me (us) as I was wondering about this since I am the one that started this post and was wanting some clarification on this compared to your other builds (Crusader, Rock, etc)..

Now, if I ordered one, what is the turnaround time for this rifle? Is it a shipped out rifle ready to go in a week or a month, etc??? Thanks Scot..

2-3 months, Barreled actions are complete for the first 10 of them. 20 more Actions in house with 20 stocks on order, As soon as Manners delivers the first 12 I can ship those within a week. 12 barrels here and 12 more on order so basicly the first 24 will be turned inside of 5 months with the first 10 being ready in about 8-10 weeks

Thats easy! Look at the above posts where guys tend to think is nessesary. I advise on my opinion and then stop short on arguing with somone that demands their AICS be bedded.

I do have one other question regarding the stock color/finish.

Is the color/finish exactly as pictured on the gaprecision website or is it a different color combination? I realize it may not be the same exact pattern, but I saw another rifle on here that has the manners stock and the color combination is the GAP camo color combo. I am hoping that it is the same pictured brown, black and tan like the TR rifle is pictured on the website? Thanks

I was at thunder Ranch when Miss Heidi Fired the first round through it (HART class May 11-15.) With Miss Heidi shooting it is extremely accurate.

per their website, it is .900 at the bore meaning it is just a tad bit bigger than the varmint contour...

It appears to be the same contour as the gladious just bigger a the muzzle. The gladious is a mod. Rem.'varmint count with a 3.5" breech length. That's all

Were you not the poster that asked me the following question above;

"So you know it for sure to be a modified rem. Varmint contour?"

My point is that I am comparing the stated contour on GAP's website to be .900 and my AAC-SD countour which is .875 at the muzzle. I am told that this AAC-SD is a varmint contour, that is my point!

Were you not the poster that asked me the following question above;

"So you know it for sure to be a modified rem. Varmint contour?"

My point is that I am comparing the stated contour on GAP's website to be .900 and my AAC-SD countour which is .875 at the muzzle. I am told that this AAC-SD is a varmint contour, that is my point!

guys, I just looked at Thunder Ranch's facebook page and if you go down and start at May 11, 2011 they have a bunch of pics of the new TR GAP rifle while they were breaking it in. Finally a living TR Rifle, looks great too.
