I recently got rifle ADD and decided that I really wanted to just stick with all gas guns for my coyote and long range rigs.  I had gotten a new 243 bolt gun rigged up for shooting the precision rifle competitions.  When the ADD kicked in I was given the opportunity to get a rifle that was built by GA Precision rifles in Kansas City, MO, so I jumped on that like a chicken on a June bug.

I am proud to own one now and picked it up a couple weeks prior to Christmas so Merry Christmas to me and thanks to all the guys at GAP rifles who are just awesome.  Mine is the GAP10 and the caliber is a new wildcat called the 6mm Creedmoor.  It is simply the 6.5 Creedmoor necked down to the 6mm bullets.  Those who know me know that I have a love for the 6mm bullets.  This fits the bill nicely.  If you don't know what a 6.5 Creedmoor looks like then you can think of it as a shortened 243.  The advantage for this 6mm Creedmoor is evident in gas guns more so than in bolt guns and this is due to the magazine lengths that you are forced to use in the AR10 platform.  You can load the very long bullets out to maximum length and still easily fit into the mag for the GAP10.  This means you can put maximum powder to get velocities similar to the 243 while having low recoil and such.  Sure a bolt gun 243 can out run this one, but in a gas gun the differences go away and you get 243 statistics with less.  I think it is the ultimate long range caliber for the gas guns.

The rifle is built using a billet POF upper and lower and a POF hunter sniper handguard that extends all the way back to the charging handle to give an elevated optics mounting platform.  The barrel is a Bartlein 5R with a GAP Titan brake on the end and is 23 inches long before brake.  The trigger is a single staged Timney set at a crisp 3.5 pounds.  The stock is the MagPul PRS and I put an Accushot monopod on the stock rails.  Grip is the Magpul MOE.  I have a Phoenix Tactical DLOCed Harris S-BRM with pod lock up front.  The mount is a Badger Ordnance 34 mm one piece ring set.  Badger also provided a universal safety.  The trigger pins are all locked in place.  The scope is a new Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-21x50 34mm tube with a custom GAP G2 reticle inside. I am starting out using custom manufactured ammo until Hornady releases the dies for individuals to use.

I only had 19 rounds to begin with so I put 5 of those onto paper for a zero and then all the rest thus far have went onto fur.  I ran out of bullets killing coyotes.  I have received some more ammo today from Copper Creek Cartridge Company so will be able to "waste" ammo shooting for groups and learning the ballistics. I am starting off shooting the 105 grain Hornady BTHP match bullets with the AMP jackets.  The ballistic coefficient on these is .530 and I should be launching them around 3050 fps or so. I will also be testing the 105 Berger hybrids, the 107 Sierra MatchKings and the 115 DTACs out of this rifle. I will report back once I am able to run the testing properly.

Here are a few pics of the rifle as it is now.  The paint is cerakote and was applied by myself.  Nothing too fancy for this, just effective.  I will continue with more information as I get it.  This will be my primary long range precision competition rifle.  It will get limited use for coyotes.  It is a bit much on them for my tastes, but there are times when too much is just right.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Nice rig dude! Interesting, I'm looking at an 6XC on a Mega build.

Keep us posted, I think we'd all like to see some accuracy reports especially with the 115 DTAC.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

I have several 6mm rifles. The XC, 6 Creed, and 6 Crusader are all a joy to shoot. little to no recoil and blazing speeds.

Plus now this feeds and runs reliably in a gas gun!? what's not to like?

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Absolutely reliable thus far. I am mostly shooting coyotes and not paper or steel right now, but I did send some 105 grain Hornady BTHP from Copper Creek over a chrono yesterday and they are running in the 3040 to 3070 range without over pressure signs. That isn't too bad at all. We are going to definitely be under half minute groups, but that is with too limited of data to verify just how much until I stop killing things and start testing more. I have some 105 Berger hybrids, some 107 SMKs and some 115 DTAC loads coming for testing soon.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Who makes the dies and is this a GAP spec chamber or is the reamer commonly available. I guess you just run 6.5 Creed cases through the full length sizer - is that right? I think the XC, which is the one I am going with for now, has about the same capacity, the only difference is there's no necking down to do. Out of an AR10/LR308 the 6mm Creed or XC are a better proposition than the 243 I'm thinking.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Hornady makes the dies currently, but they aren't available to the public except as a custom for the time being. GAP will have some regular dies in soon. I am having my first batches of ammo built for me. I have shot some from McCourt Munitions and also now from Copper Creek so both of those guys are running. Brass is much cheaper and easier to find for the 6 Creedmoor than the 6XC. Recoil is so light that you can easily watch the fur and spray cloud on a targeted coyote. That is what I enjoy and demand from my rigs.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

I came very close to ordering one of these even called Ken at GAP but found a used Medesha AR10 in 6MMX. Sounds like a great round. What kind of barrel life has been quoted?

And you can form from 22-250 also.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Myself, I prefer the cheaper brass and not having to do anything but run the sizer to neck down the brass and done. Velocity is good for what I intend to use it for and first impressions are that this is going to be quite the shooter when all is said and done. There will be zero issues running under half minute with this off bipods and in the dirt. It has a lot going for it from my point of view. I am expecting usable barrel life well over 2K rounds, but will find out when I find out and then screw the next barrel on. It will also be a 6mm Creedmoor.

Medesha are going to be putting together my 6XC.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

great idea ARP--I was wanting to stick with AR15 platform and neck Grendel down to 6mm---probably been done but that GAP sure is cool-lookin' ---next time u paint a rifle for me personally I'd like that color scheme!

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Safe to say that GAP is on top of their game. Its about once a month that I get convinced I want a GA Precision rifle and every month its a different rifle. I will own one, one of these years.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

I have already owned one of those necked down Grendels BERT. It was called a 6mm RAT. It is also known as the 6mm AR Turbo 40 improved. I also have a 6.8 SPC necked to 6mm. That one is my number one favorite coyote rifle.

What velocities were you getting from the Turbo 40? And how would you compare it to the 6mm Creed?

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

Mine was the 6RAT built by Lee Wells of accurate and reliable rifles. The 6RAT was pushing the 107 SMKs into the low to mid 2800s with a 27.5 inch barrel. The 6mm Creed is pushing those into the 3050 - 3070 range with a 23 inch barrel. Recoil on each is minimal and you can see your own impacts. Both are very accurate.

Re: GAP10 6mm Creedmoor

My 6 Rat (ARP's old RAT) has made it to 1200 yds. so far, but the energy is on the light side on steel. You can see hits, but it's tough. It's an absolute laser to 850. I'm using the 105 Hornady HPBT @2850 fps.
