Any field reports with the Garmin Foretrek 701 with Applied Ballistics?

Looking at a new gps for the field/hunting and redundancy for the Kestel Elite with AB.

I've been using my phone for GPS- but that is getting old fighting the battery.

Does anyone know if you can attach wind meters to the 701? Frank said on one of the podcasts he was talking to garmin about getting Weatherflow meters to work on them.
No, not at this time. The only devices the 701 connects to are Garmin tempe sensor, Garmin HRM-Run Heart Rate Monitor band, and mobile device via Garmin Connect App.

Just for another data point, I use mine every Saturday since the beginning of October.

I use it for 5 different rifles and with the two I shot the most, 260 and 300wm, it never fails to put the first shot on the steel from 100 out to 1200 yards. We also set up one gallon milk jugs at varing distances out to 800 yards, find distance with a range finder, but it in the 701 or go to the range card screen and shoot. It is abnormal that we miss the jug because of the DOPE. Sorry I can't say with more accuracy but have not shot paper beyond 800 in a long time. If I miss it is due to gusting winds or a problem with the shooter.

The 701 will also connect to your iPad or iPhone and show any texts that you receive.

I also have a Kestrel with the AB program, but other than using it for determining winds, have not used it since I received the Garmin.

I’ve been using the 701 AB for a couple of months and really like it . Solutions using the
included CDM’s are accurate , and being able to bracket the wind using the 2 wind
entry’s is a great feature . I don’t have the Tempe sensor yet , so still use the Kestrel
for temperature input . Haven’t shot past 2300 meters yet , but solutions are
excellent up to that distance so far . Recommended .

This is what I am afraid of... ^^^^^^

Don't be skeert, you will love it. Easier to program, for me anyway, more functions, Ect. The one thing I don't like about it is that I can't input the DA. Must enter WX to have the 701 calculate the DA.

If you get the Tempe sensor, along with FW 2.40 then it will auto update atmospherics every 5 minutes. No need to input anything.

If you set the GPS to Demo mode after you get a latitude (as long as you are not using it for navigation) you can greatly extend the battery life. It has 4 modes. GPS +, GPS, Ultratrac, Demo. Each mode increases battery life. When you turn it off, or go to watch mode, then it will automatically turn GPS back on when you go back to operating it. In other words DEMO mode disables after a restart so you cannot accidentally leave the GPS off.

You can also download your waypoints and anything that you mark to basecamp. Then you can get topographical or satellite view maps to see where you shot. Or you can just save the waypoints for future use. I have waypoints from many different firing ranges and ELR events. No plans to remove them.

Well, I may have a Kestrel 5700 Elite to sell very soon... Love how it works, I just think the Garmin will cover more bases for me, expecially the GPS function. I'm tired of using my phone and worrying about battery life, etc.

Stevo, why do you input the DA, instead of letting the Garmin update the atmospherics?

Doc, I did order the Tempe, so we'll see how that works.

That is what I didn't like, I can't simply input the DA, have to let it figure it out. When I purchased the 701 I immediately ordered the Tempe. It works great and the temp is automatically updated. Make sure it isn't in the sun ect. In Houston the DA doesn't change very much so I have not even inputed the pressure for the DA in the last few months. If I remember correctly the temp auto updates, but you need to ensure the baro is set right OR the field elevation.

I have access to DAs very quickly and not have to make sure the temp, pressure, and humidity is correct.

It is a very minor issue, would still by it again.

    Thanks guys.

Bought the 701 and the Tempe. It impresses me. Haven't shot with it, but I like its functionality more than the Kestrel. Gonna sell the Kestrel 5700 and get a simple wind meter so I can buy more ammo or something.

    Hereinaz,

I have a simple wind meter/WX station that links with iPhone or iPad. Very inexpensive and gives me everything I think I need to know. Since it bluethooths you can leave it up where you think it will take the best wind readings and just look at your device for info.

Yes, stopped using it for now. I bought a Kestrel and my shooting partner uses it. He tells me wind and I enter it in the 701. What I have been doing is starting out close, 300 or 500 yards and looking for correction. I enter wind correction in the 701 until it reads what the correction needs to be and use that for all the distances.
