Garmin Instinct Base Range?

Can someone tell me what the "Base Range" setting on Applied Ballistics on a Garmin Instinct Watch is?
What is it's purpose, I cant find the definition in the manual and have tried Googling.

It is a setting on the Range Card that determines the starting range for the range card. You can set the base range and increment to customize the range card.

I just noticed that you can move up a screen to get to closer ranges, depending on your range increment this may change your range card settings and this is not intended, and we'll get it on the list to correct in an update.
