I don't know if this has been discussed or not I am new here. I want to get into shooting PRS type matches some of them would be official PRS matches some would be just local club matches that are precision rifle.

I would really like to build a gas gun though. I have a matched SI upper and lower that fit really tight. What would be the disadvantage of building this into a 6mm super cartridge of some sort if I did a 25 inch barrel that was good quality like a brux or bartlein, chambered it with a match dimension reamer, and head spaced it to the bolt I am gong to use.. I was thinking 6mm xc, 6mm competition match, or just a 243 win. I have seen AR 10 platform rifles shoot well under 1/2 MOA if they are put together properly.

The advantages I see are faster follow up shots. I like the ergonomics better on the AR platform. I would use it more outside of competition. I could build a 308 upper for practice.

The disadvantages I would see are trigger and lock time, potentially it would be longer I haven't measured a ar-10 vs a bolt gun with the same barrel so I don't know. OAl length restrictions with the magazine.

Thanks
Dave

I know several guys who shoot gas guns in PRS matches. They can be just as accurate as bolt guns but some ranges such as Rifles Only make you go bolt back mag out every time you move around a stage, sometimes as much as 4-5 times PER STAGE. So, you would be dropping live rounds up to 5 times a stage, and most of the time you do not have the time to go back and scoop them up. They are also more prone to jamming/misfeading than a bolt rifle, which can make or brake a stage. Can it be done, absolutely. Is it the best option, probably not.

I agree with you on the advantage being quick follow up shots, which is why I built my LR-308 in 6.5mm creedmoor. Less recoil than a 308 will get the follow up shot out quicker and it shoots flatter so less elevation adjustments on long range.

Well maybe I should just build this rifle in 308 and build a bolt action 6mm later. Do you think that gas guns will gain popularity and eventually take over bolt actions.

In my opinion, gas guns will never overtake bolt guns for precision rifle matches, for these three reasons.

1.) Weight...something that gas guns have more of. Added weight slows down the shooter.

2.) Accuracy...while gas guns CAN be almost as accurate, they never will be as accurate due to the nature of the beast i.e. three recoil impulses, something that will cause problems every time if you are not perfectly set-up behind the rifle.

3.) With more moving parts, there's more than can go wrong with an auto loader.

My main PRS rifle for the moment is a ma-ten setup in 6 creedmoor. Its a 22" bartlein barrel. Its fast, fun and accurate. With precision gas guns the thing that rears its head is cleanliness. Im shooting suppressed as well and after 80 rounds i can see the need to clean the reciprocating parts. The thing about moving with bolts back is. You can carry however many rds in the movement required per mag so after the bolt locks back kick it out and move. Ro's may pick up a mag for you over bullets, but they will surely allow magazine retrieval.
