Ok guys hoping someone with ocd already has a packing list together, but next month a budy and I are planning a 3 day outing in michigan for a deer hunt. This is my first hunting trip and looking for a list of must have gear and maybe things you never thought to bring at first and are now must haves. Thanks

Re: Gear list for first deer hunt

All the normal hunting stuff like a gun, knife, pack and some rope, plus some Crown Royal, cigars, brats, chips, cell phone to call pizza dude, satellite dish to watch football, camera to take pictures of your buddy after he passes out and you write all over his face with a marking pen, Brillo pad to scrub your face in case you pass out first, take lots of pictures of the woods to show your wife so she thinks you really did go hunting.

168, nice fall back plan is always the strip club and I have a nice 18yr old bottle of scotch that needs attention. Jason thanks for the list exactly what I was looking for just a nice starting point to fill the truck

Re: Gear list for first deer hunt

I had to occupy almost a month a few years back. I took a month vacation to go elk hunting with my buddies in Montana. I shot my bull on the first day so I got to hold down the camp and wait for someone else to shoot something so I could help pack it out.

Re: Gear list for first deer hunt

For me it depends on what I'm hunting. Elk, everything is already in my Horse Trailer w/living quarters. More then I need but its more of a camping then hunting trip. Plenty of extra 'quick foods" as self defense for when my Grandaughter desides she needs to cook.

Deer its just a rifle and pocket knife. For antelope I add a Range finder and GPS to my deer list.

I did have fun that trip. All my buddies went in on horses, I went in on foot the next canyon over and met them 5 miles in where we camped. I cut fresh tracks on the way in and followed them until I jumped the bull I shot. I had him down at 8:30, gutted and hauled back to the top of the ridge by 11:30, by about 2:00 I was waiting at the camping spot for everyone else. It took the better part of the next three days to get him to the bottom of the mountain where we could get horses close enough to pack him out the rest of the way. It rained like heck the day after I shot him and for the next three days, so all of the trails up the mountain were too greasy to take horses up. I was so tired after the second trip up and down the mountain I left my rifle and pack at the bottom, I figured all the grizzlies were laughing their butts off watching me and wouldn't bother a tired old SFWD. It took six trips in all, one for each quarter plus one each for the hide and head. After that is was sit back and wait for someone else to shoot something.
