Hey all,

I'm thinking about SBRing a GSG-5 and adding a suppressor to it and was looking at either Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock for a .22lr suppressor.

Any of you guys have any input on either? Or possibly a comparison of the two?

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

I am not a qualified source for providing experienced tech answer's but I am considering another .22 rimfire Suppressor.

I have the Outback-2 and like it, my other Suppressor is prolly gonna be the Gemtech G5-22.

The idea of being able to take-it appart for cleaning has merit.

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

Outback II now comes with the ability to take apart and have either alum/steel or Titanium baffles...your choice....first 22 can that I bought and it is excellent !!!
Dont have input on the Warlock but SWR is also a great company to deal with....

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

I have both the SWR Warlock and SWR Spectre . The Warlock came out first - it is all aluminum . It is very light and quiet ... Due to customers' demands , SWR released a full-auto rated version - the Spectre . It has stainless-steel internals , and disassembles for cleaning . Take-down tools are available . It it also rated for .22 magnum and 5.7x28 . It weighs more than the Warlock , but it is just as quiet . Both can be fired 'wet' , although they are so efficient that an ablative does not improve their performance - at least to my ears ... I use the Warlock for my PPK and Ruger pistol , the Spectre sees use on my Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 880 squirrel gun ... I've met SWR's owners and they are stand-up guys . Their customer service is considered by many to be the best in the industry ...

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

I have the SWR Spector. Rated up to and includes .223, although not for too many shots. I use it on a Walther 22 and 17 HMR with great results. It can be taken apart for cleaning. No experience with the others mentioned.

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

I would check with SWR on shooting .223 through the Spectre. I don't think it is recommended at all. I think it was Henry from SWR on the video showing a full auto mag dump of 223 to show its strength.

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

Wait, so these things will quiet down a 17 HMR? I have two I use for hunting so... SWEEET!!!

I'd like to be able to take it apart for cleaning, however I am a total NOOB to NFA / suppressors. Hell, I thought they were called "silencers" most of my life :p

Can someone explain what running one wet means? And, if you can't take it apart for cleaning, will shit just build up in it until it's eventually useless?

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

Silencers = suppressors = 'cans' ... They function by cooling the hot gas , some designs use a small amount of water or other liquids (ablatives) to enhance the cooling effect . Some pistol-caliber designs are comparatively small because they rely on an ablative as a way to decrease volume . Most liquids last 10-15 shots before requiring more ... .22 rimfire is a dirty round . Some of the lead is vaporized and accumulates inside the can . A sealed unit can fill up to the point that it no longer functions (over 10,000 rounds) . SWR will drill it out and rebuild the Warlock if this happens - the first time is free ... Umm, no. They won't even warranty the Spectre on a .22 hornet. They won't rate it for the Hornet, why would they rate it for the .223?

To the OP: This day in age, I think your better off with a user serviceable can. I have a Warlock and it is a relly good can. But, for hi volume shooting I use the Spectre. There are a lot of good take apart .22 cans on the market now. Do your homework,,,

What ever happened to the gemtech GSG-5 suppressor conversion? They quit makin them? If I remember right, the core was permanently attached or somethin? So as to cut it down to one tax stamp??? Seemed like a good idea, must not have been.

While a good idea to save a tax stamp, I'd rather have a can I can legally move to another .22 cal, such as a future Walther P22 or even use on my 17HMR rifles.

Slow there, Bucky!
Cans are intended and desired to tolerate specific pressures and gas volumes, for which the manufacturer "rates" for such use.
Most light weight rimfire suppressors are rated only for .22LR AND SMALLER, specifically, .22 Long and .22 Short as long the .22LR. Typically these are mostly aluminum. They aren't rated for full-auto .22s, either.

More robust cans may be with with stainless or titanium; some of these will be rated for cartridges generating higher and/larger gas volume. These are often such cans permit use of .22WMF .17HM2 and .17HMR. Typically are also rated for .22LR full-auto.

Some, like the SWR Spectre and IIRC the newest SS Silencero Sparrow, are rated for 5.7FN.
Typically are heavier due to more robust construction, except if titanium is used.

SRW declines to rate for the .22 Hornet due to the possible variables of such firearms. Is if a 24" bolt action with light bullets, or is it a hot 10" Contender?

As for .223, do you do every some douche bag uploads on YouTube?

There is an HGM "Universal" the manufacturers certificated for .22LR right up to .223. Sealed.

Anything over the speed of sound sounds like .22LR HV, except muzzle is removed. So your .17HMR isn't that more quiet than before.

Suppressor, silencer, moderator, muffler, they all mean the same thing. Maxim called them silencers. Some feel its erudite to use the term "suppressor".
Euros/Brits often like the term "moderators". Air gun gunners say LDC (lead dust collector), shroud, or moderator.

"Wet" means the use of water, gel, grease or some similar material in RIMFIRE OR PISTOL ONLY to enhance sound reduction.

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

I have both and was surprised to think personally the OBII had less frp. The Silencerco SS Sparrow due to materials and design would be my pick. Check out the video's on www.22sparrow.com. They compare/meter their can against the most popular cans. That should help you decide!

Re: Gemtech Outback II or SWR Warlock?

I want to kinda/sorta amend my first remarks:

"I am not a qualified source for providing experienced tech answer's but I am considering another .22 rimfire Suppressor.

===================================

RETROSPECT****...

Right now I have an amatuer's level grade 1, of knowledge about Suppressors. The first time I fired my Outback in the hall way of my basement at a 40 lb 20 inch round log. The sonic-wak between the walls was horrendous cause I thought there would'nt be any sound. Then I learned about SubSonic velocity vs standard Velocity.

When I shot that log again...I NOTICED a big difference! Now I am thirsty for more knowledge on Suppressors and I will salvage what hearing is left and I will be abe to hear all those HONEY DO's in the future.

Now I ask: "why didn't I get a Suppressor which would handle a .22mag"? I didn't because I did not know! I did not know how to ask a question let alone what question to ask..period. Of course price was an issue but not really an issue: I got tons of stuff I can sell which gives me 'travel'n cash'. When I look back after buying my FIRST Suppressor (OutBack 2)...I tell myself I coulda bought a Suppressor that would handle 5.56, .22, 22mag.

One Suppressor for use in a broader spectrum of 22-caliber type ammo.

So, with this 'accrued' knowledge I bought a Gemtech SandStorm which I can use with my 308, 30-06, 300WinMag... with these I have everything necessary for any game on this continent and most other's.

Since I traded one of my stainless guns - I can't believe they still make Blue Steel guns..) - with a Class 3 Dlr for one of his OutBack's. I am now looking for an up grade in a Suppressor. One which handle my .22, 22mag, and a 5.56 when I buy it...

So now I have a new challenge and that is to decide which Suppressor for 'the' 5.56 and my .22 and my .22 mag. Because of the freaking aging process, aches and pains, and an elongated healing process I must put on hold my 400+ lb bench press for a while and during this while, I have time to find out -more- about my new 5.56 Suppressor..

And frankly with the IQ's on this stuff, floating around on this site like a bunch of lost souls who no longer have a target ) ...I don't have to go to the library...

****Thank's 264...I needed that word..
