Night Vision Gen 1 night vison

Re: Gen 1 night vison

Both ATN and commercial gen 1 units should be avoided for the most part. The commercial gen 1 units are not very good as a whole (not to be confused with mil-surplus gen 1 units). Without extra IR illumination, they are not significantly better than your eye when acclimated to the dark. Even with IR illumination, you can see much further than 50-75 yards with much detail. I base this on a cheap Bushnell gen 1 unit I used to have.

Instead of getting a gen 1 commercial unit. I would either get a used gen 2 monocular and use an IR laser. There are a ton of monoculars made from PVS-5 tubes. They perform very well for the money as long as you get a decent unit. Or get a gen 1 mil-surplus scope. There is currently the Ziess Orion I gen 1 military surplus scope on the market for $500. I believe these can be exported from the US (unlike gen 3 units).

About the only option then is a cascade tube. They are cheap and give a good image, but are very large and heavy and have image distortion.

Gen1 is OK in bright moonlight, but lacks gain. To put it into context, Gen1 gain ( amplification ) is around 300 while Gen2 and Gen3 is around 30,000- A big difference.

Gen1 simply can't handle dark situations.

With a *very* good illuminator like the Da Torch, you can get reasonable use out to about 100yds with a typical Gen1.
