Does anyone have a pic of any gen 1 NV scopes with or without an IR illuminator that could post them, i hear all the time that they arent worth buying, but its about all i can afford, and i dont want to get one if i am not going to be able to use it hunting hogs at around 75 yards.

i am talking about a pic through the scope, at night with some referance to the distance of the target..

i have seen plenty of pics of pvs-14's but they are out of my price range. more looking for what i could expect if i was looking through a cheap ATN scope.

Distance to car - about 30 yards.

Gen1 = ATN 3x scope. Gen2 = AN/PVS-4... Illuminator in Gen1 pics is built in.

On the other hand, here's a Gen1 riflescope - distance to trees, about 100 yds. There's a decent ELR-V illuminator involved.

So it is doable, but don't expect too much

Thanks...

I saw that frist pic from a google search, and i was hoping to get something a little better..

i guess this is as i expected, i get a better sight picture from a good flashlight and my cheap millet scope at night, i guess im gonna keep saving up for at least a gen 2

Most digital is about the same as Gen1... Gain is roughly the same and the image is usually pretty good.

With a good illuminator, Digital is OK, but I wouldn't plan on shooting more than 100yards with it.

And it chews through the batteries pretty quick.

at $1300, you're more than half way to Gen2. IIRC, you can get Gen2 for less than $2000 and it works a LOT better than digital IMO. Certainly gain is far higher. Add a decent illuminator and you're better off.

Save your pennies and keep an eye on the boards for a used PVS-14. I just picked up another one like new with full kit minus the eyecup for 2400 shipped.

Re: gen 1 NV example

The commercial gen 1 units are not worth buying. I had one and it really is not all the useful. A decent flash light is better. Without additional illumination (from an IR flash light or surrounding light), it isn't all that much better than dark acclimated eyesight.

Here is a link to an excellent post on the various generations of night vision:

AR15.com post

Now, don't confuse military surplus gen 1 & commercial gen 1 units. The military grade stuff is much better and close to gen 2 in performance (even rivals early gen 3). But they are big and have short service life (1,000 hours for gen 1 vs. 10,000 hours for gen 3). They are also very sensitive to surroundling lights such as you would get in even rural areas and don't really have a supply of replacement parts.

Gen 2 is where it really get useful. You can see things that you can't see with the naked eye in darkness. This is the best value for the money. You can find used units well under $1K, although when buying used it is buyer beware. I have only bought used NV and am extremely happy with what I have. But I have bought one unit that was no good and learned my lesson.

Gen 3 is where it really gets good. Under a full moon, you'll wonder why you paid all the extra money for a gen 2 vs. gen 3. But when the moon sets or you are in the shadows, you will see where your money went. On no moon nights, you'll think your gen 2 unit is broken when running it next to a gen 3. Of course you pay to play with gen 3.
