Got into a discussion with a friend about why Generals don't show up on the ballot anymore. To which he responded that there had been only Washington, Jackson, Grant, and Ike. And I waited...

So question for the Hide. Without going for references does anyone else remember who and/or how many Presidents had been generals (it's not 4).

Re: Generals for President

Generals did alright, but todays generals are more like politicians.

Today I think a successful major business owner (someone like Trump) could do America a lot of good.

Gingrich almost seems like a good idea right now, but I'd vote Trump over Gingrich if there was a choice.

No independents though- screw that splitting the vote garbage. The Republican front runner is the only sane vote.

Re: Generals for President

Can you imagine McChrystal or Mattis(when he retires) as a candidate? I mean especially Mattis, I can just see him at a debate:
"General Mattis would you like to respond to the Senator's remarks"
"Yes I would Anderson: Go Fuck Yourself, thank you."

I think I see the same one.

Hahaha maybe more people would actually watch the debates then!

Re: Generals for President

If I could nominate someone that was a General to run for President it would without a doubt be.
Maurice O. Edmonds who as a LTC took the 5/7 Cav. 1st. Cav. Div. into Cambodia and ran a lot of ops before they went.
He looked at everything and ran his recons, as they should have been done, then went in there and Kicked Ass and gathered names.
A real stand up guy.
The only commander I had in the Army that I felt comfortable with when he sent me into harms way.
When on the ground, he was out with us, not flying overhead.
Bless him, I wish he would run, but feel he is too honest to deal with the shit.
He would tell you to go Fuck yourself, but in a way that you knew that was the right thing to be said.
Regards, FM

Re: Generals for President

People don't have a universal respect for the military like they did when Eisenhower was elected. You would get some of conservatives, no liberal votes, no welfare votes, it would be a disaster. We live in a world of special interest groups. The ideal candidate can pull nearly all of one side of the spectrum and some of the people from the other social and political camps.

I don't think a General would have a chance today.

If someone had to try, Gen Petraeus would have been one of the stronger candidates, but is the CIA Chief now.

Re: Generals for President

US Army General Norman Schwarzkopf

To be honest. I don't know what he's been up to, his health, or if any bad press has happened to him since. But I think he would be well liked by the masses.

You're probably right. He'd be a strong candidate. I still think people want/need business sense right now more than military leadership.

Re: Generals for President

Gen Petraeus is probably better qualified to run a country as internationally connected as the US, you with that silly scrap of paper he got from Princton. :)He also wouldn't be the first CIA Director to become President

Gen Schwarzkopf is 77(ish)I'm not sure what his health is like but he is 2 years older than McCain, and I remember his age was not received well 3 years ago.

Re: Generals for President

The last general I heard that was running was Wesley Clark. I can't remember his stance on anything, just putting it out there that he did.

Colin Powell always has a vote with me, if he would ever decide to run.

I also heard about a former commander of the Army Marksmanship Unit who I think would be a stellar candidate.
