We know we're going to be facing China in the near future, so we need to take out Russia first now in Ukraine, so we don't end up fighting 2 near peers simultaneously in different areas of the world.

Currently we still have the tech and military advantage, but especially in the realm of naval warfare, the Chinese are catching up quickly and the longer we wait to engage, the harder it will be to fight with them.

Any engagement in the South China Sea will be just a bit over 100 miles off China's shore.

China's LAND BASED missiles vs what we bring by ship & distant ally bases. Not a good situation. They basically can fire an unlimited # of missiles at our ships. Bad, bad.

They sink a single one of our carriers, and the "war with China" will be over. US will not be willing to stay engaged in a war where we lose 4,000+ Americans in a single day. Even with US allies trying to limit the chips available to China, between their ability to reverse engineer and their domestic capacity it won't be a deterrent for long. Once they take Taiwan, they will have access to everything then need in that regard.

Pretty sure that the Ukrainians have had the better kill ratio for several months - maybe not the first days of the invasion, but certainly once the West stepped in to help.

My guess on the timing of the announcement is that this stuff is made public once it's undeniable, not when the paperwork first starts.

FWIW, the Soviet/Russian T-80 has turbine variants, but I believe that the Ukrainian version had a diesel.

The potato isn't even a factor in this shit show - it's people like Blinken and Sullivan who are running this operation as if it were a think-tank academic exercise.
