Been out of the 2 stroke game for a long while, been playing with modern 4 strokes MX bikes, and I'm done. Picking up a 2003 KX 500, widow maker, and gonna rip my arms out of socket. Need tips/advice on tuning, oil mix, etc.. Probably gonna run Maxima Super M, but open to all ideas. I'm at sea level, so gonna have to re jet when it gets here from Wyoming.

Oh Jesus. Enjoy that power-house! "The one bike you ride before you die".

The goal is always to make the front tire touch the rear tire... at least that's what I did when I owned a XR 250. My brother had a CR 250 and even that was enough power for my ass. I couldn't imagine 500 CC's of it.

Parts are pretty available for most part, and the bike is in great shape. Guy takes care of his machines like I do. I'm just done with the every 3 hour oil changes, and absence valve adjustments, and top end rebuilds. I'm a recreational rider man, don't have time for all that. So a smoking I am going. Ha. Yeah, PC and FMF still do pipes, it has a Gnarly on it already. JD jet kits 'eh, way to go? Been looking at them for tuning it once I get it.

flush it with seafoam, half a can let set over night. good luck, i been eyeing a 350 or a 250 lately, my 450 4 stroke is good enough but i do want a 2 stroke before i get too old to be jumping/

Has a 2012 450F, loved it, but got rid of it about 2 years ago after pulling my hair out. Cam chain took a shit, wasn't stretched or nothing, only about 25 not hard hours on it. Tensioner never moved so I know it wasn't stretched. Think it jumped cam gear and shit went south. Rebuilt it, ran it, sold it.

Seriously! I long for an xr600 with good suspension and estart. And only 250lbs.

I worked for motorcycle dealerships for about 7 years (honda and kawasaki). Treat your gas with stabil or star tron all of the time. Run the honda 2 stroke oil. Replace and grease every bearing and seal on that bike. Have the suspension set up for your riding style and height/weight.

If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me.

Rode an RM250 for a few years. I always used Klotz R50 for premix. Never had issues with fouling, it ran great, and most importantly it smelled like strippers. Changed my gearbox oil and swapped in a cleaned air filter every ride because it was cheap, and I never had an issue out of the engine or trans.

I'm on a KTM 300 EXC after growing up as a die hard 4-stroke fan. I also got tired of the intensive maintenance that modern hyper power 4-strokes require.

I'm a woods rider, and the best thing I have put on my bike is a Lectron carburetor. 50% gain in fuel mileage and drivability is not far off from a 4-stroke. Currently running a Gnarly pipe and a shaved head that has my squish band down to .045". More power everywhere and is very predictable for a 2-stroke. I can climb most any technical hill without any pipey surprises.

i always ran amsoil in my mix. one tip for the 500 WEAR BOOTS. ive seen someone break their leg when it backfired and the kickstarted kicked back.... boots would have save him but he was too cool.

other then that love the on the pipe riding style of the 2 smokes. i really miss it. sometimes i revert to that style of the 450 and it just doesnt work lol.

Great info guys. Appreciate it. Bike was rebuilt bottom w years ago. Top end last year. US chrome nkiasil the head and piston. All bearing are current on axles and swing arm. Not sure on slide cut. Pretty sure it's stock. Coming with 2 rear wheels complete. One paddle. One with new Scorpion. NIB chain and 4 nib sprockets. Title. Original manual. And he burns ok n ethanol unleaded. Use be nice to have thst access. I will treat with stabil as I can't find pure fuel where I'm at.
Now. Mix per manual or lighter? I think per manual. Gonna try Maxima Super M.

Yes to Seafoam. I raced a KX 500 for years before I got my RMZ 450. Sold it Oct and just got a DRZ 400.two weeks ago.

500s are awesome but can be a bitch to start. Have to put some boot to it. Not my first choice for trail riding. Excellent choice for hilly MX tracks
