I am shooting a 20" .223 1-9 bolt gun with 75amax at 2750 suppressed. Considering cutting it back to 16" for EZ field use. I'm only shooting it to 650yrds now and it shoots well. On paper the concept looks good. Does anybody have experience with a similar setup?

Thanks,
Trilogymac

Re: Getting out the hacksaw

Problem with cutting a 20" to 16 without moving the gas block and gas hole in the barrel to the place that is needed for a 16" rifle to function is that just cutting the barrel off will screw up the gas operation and the gun will not work.

Re: Getting out the hacksaw

You'll lose about 150FPS but other than that there shouldn't be any issues. It should still be a fine 650 yard gun (probably not much after that though).

Re: Getting out the hacksaw

Hurry up and do it and take some pics, I'm thinking the same thing with a little project I'm working on. Truck/coyote gun would be handy at 16" indeed and would finish at 23" suppressed for me.

Oh...I'd go 16.25" just in case someone at the ATF wasn't quite as accurate with a tape measure as I am

Been thinking about the same myself. Are you going to do this yourself or have a gunsmith do it? I can cut mine myself but I am wondering about recrowning it. Any ideas? Keep us posted. Thanks

Re: Getting out the hacksaw

a good friend of mine is doing the same thing. savage 10fp le cut to 16.5". I was suprised but it still shot sub moa at 100yrds in a stiff wind with me behind it. I did not notice a higher sound level over my 24" rifle. it took 14 months for aac to build his can so it will be threaded soon and I will get you some more info then. the delay on the can was due to the metric threads on his tikka tactical that will be the primary host for the can.

Re: Getting out the hacksaw

I just had my GAP Crusader cut down from 22" to 17.5" I also added my new AAC muzzle brake, it will be getting a 762SD in about a month or so!

Ill post pics when its here.
