Getting Started

I have wanted to get a gun built for a while, and got serious about it a couple months ago. I have been shooting with family and friends several times, always have fun, so why not get my own gun...

I like to do my homework, so I joined a couple forums and did a lot of reading. The one that applied the most was on here, about "budget build". So many other threads have been so helpful, so many members have a depth of knowledge I do not believe I will ever achieve (as it pertains to firearms).

I am just getting started, so I had a fair amount to get together. A safe, and a locking ammo box to keep things safe at home. Eye & ear protection, cleaning tools and supplies, course and license... Then came the accessories for the gun itself. Picked up the Harris bipod, with the requisite lever handle. The sling and swivel clips, base and rings. Then came the scope and the rifle! I realized I spent within my budget, not based on what I can afford, rather, what I can justify.

My preferred gun shop had to order the rifle, which arrived yesterday. I will be picking it up sometime next week, getting pretty excited!

I went with a Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD .308Win.
Putting on a Busnell Elite Tactical 5-15 X 40 scope.

Sounds like you made some good choices and are off to a good start with your equipment. I'd really advise signing up for the online training (if you haven't already) and learn to practice correctly to get off on the right foot with your mechanics so you aren't having to break bad habits later.

Make sure your barrel isn't touching the stock. I hear that happens with those alot. No big deal if it does, just make it stop touching.

Okay, I see the online training forum, and I can see that there a lot of lessons within that forum... I do not see how to sign up. There is no sticky at the top of the list of lessons. Am I missing something obvious, how does one view these? Thanks for the advice.

You didn't pass along where you are from, If you were in our area we'd gladly invite you along for one of our practice days at our local 1000 yard range. I'm sure others might offer the same which really will speed up the learning curve for you.

I'm pretty green to this endeavor as well. Something I've discovered here is the guys are very welcoming; you might be surprised to find out how many 'hide' members are in your area. Check the listing Tactical Competitions along with Member Link Up.

One purchase recommended to me from another member is the dvd set "The Art of the Precision Rifle" by magpul dynamics. I got mine from amazon. Good stuff.

Enjoy your sport. It's a lot of fun! I just rang the 800 yard bell a week or so ago, and heading to 1K this weekend. What a gas!

Look at the menus up top and click on ---> My Stuff ---> subscriptions. Hit details for Snipers Hide online training and signup there. Must use paypal. Money well spent for sure, lots of great information to get you going with proper mechanics.
