My grandfather was a recreational long range shooter before it was cool. Back a couple christmases ago my wife and I revealed that he was going to be a great grandfather but he missed the moment because he could hear us across the living room. Taking a cue from him and the ringing I already have in my ears I decided it's time to buy a supressor.

It's primary home will be a precision rifle but it will be on anything from a 22-250 to a 300 win hunting rifle. I plan on wearing plugs regardless. I like the 5 inch ultra because I'm not a noise snob and I value versatility over silence.

Looking for any informed input.

My advice for TB Ultra .30s is this: either buy both the Ultra 9 for real suppression and the Ultra 5 for handiness, or buy the Ultra7 and have the best of both worlds. I have significant experience with all 3 of these and I can tell you that the difference between the sound of the 9 and 7 isn't much, 7 to 5 however is quite a bit louder.

@Travclem thanks for the advice. I was considering the Ultra5 myself as more of a "muzzle brake" than a suppressor, but this has verified my decision to stick to the Ultra7

I have the Ultra 9 and Ultra 5 and a 30CB9 (the 9" prior to the Ultra). That little Ultra 5 has most certainly earned it's spot.

That's good advice (and basically what I did) and IME it seems that the jump from 5" to 7" is the largest increase in performance across the entire spectrum.

If 2" more isn't an issue, I'd get the 7. If you plan on getting two, get the 9 and 5. If suppression isn't key and moderation is, the 5" will make it happen. I get what you mean about performance. If I need true suppression, I haul out the integral .22 with built in 12" suppressor. It's not much louder than this keyboard is right now!

My 5" will take supersonic .300BLK from an 8" bbl. down to manageable levels. It barks still but the bite is gone? Won't hurt ears. With larger rifles earplugs may be ideal. I sometimes use earpro with 'em. But I can generally fire the 5" without earpro and not suffer. Works great on a 6.5G SBR I have too.

Also, as far as I know, the TBAC Ultra 5 is the only moderator length can that actually tests as a no-shit suppressor. It's a great choice, but it's not my first and only choice if that means anything. If I only had one it's be the 7 for sure.

Also, regarding length, your mount will be a little over an inch, so with the can on it only adds 4" for the 5 or 6" for the 7 or 8" for the 9. The 5 is as close to having nothing on the end of the barrel as you can get, while still reaping some of the benefits of a can. It's light years better than just a brake. The 9" makes my 6.5G sound quieter than .22, just the sonic crack.

Good luck, you can't go wrong with these guys.

In your position I'd probably get the Ultra-7 unless I absolutely knew for a fact I'd be wearing earplugs all the time while hunting. I'm a TBAC fanboy so I already have a .22 Take-down, Ultra-7, Ultra-9, and 338 Ultra. Additionally I also have an Ultra-5 in ATF jail that'll hopefully be ready for pickup in another 5-6 months. You can't go wrong with a TBAC suppressor.

I have a 5. Use it on 6.5 Creedmoor, and never on a magnum. With that being said, the handiness and light weight is second to none. I am a big fan of the 5, and wish I had another one or two exactly like it. It obviously isn’t going to win any pecker measuring contests with the decibel counters, but it makes you a whole lot closer to hearing safe without getting in the way.

This is more what I was going for with the Ultra5.

I was going to run the Ultra5 on a 16.75" .308 bbl and 24" 6.5CM barrel on an AIAX

I used to have a Creedmoor shorty. Definitely don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I don’t know about numbers, but I am pretty sensitive about protecting what little hearing I have left, taking a few shots out in the field at an animal without hearing protection didn’t make me uncomfortable at all.

Hmm I went th opposite way. I have a Gemtech sandstorm which is a good can. Then I bought an Ultra 9 which hopefully will be approved any day now then I just bought a 338 ultra. I like quiet.

I like both! You won't be let down with the Ultra 9, that's a fact. That one's pure performance.

But the 5" is probably quieter than most would give it credit for and if you have a shorty you want to keep short and be able to either fire indoors and/or without ear pro (where it still may have a bark but won't ring the ears) it's the way to go. I have one SBR with a 9" can and it's about the size of a normal M4. But with a 5" can it's still really short.

Now that you have the long, high performance cans out of the way, you could get an Ultra 5 like I did and have the best of both worlds. If that lights your fire that is. I can understand they may not be for everyone.

I did the .338 Ultra & Ultra 5 for the same reasons mentioned above. Feel like I covered my bases.

If you’re gonna wear ear-pro in combination with a can, I’d definitely be looking at a lightweight small footprint model like the Ultra 5.

I don’t have a thunderbeast 5, but I have a 7 and a 9.

Regarding “short” suppressors, I have a Surefire mini 2 on a 13” scar and love it. The small suppressor takes the bite off while still keeping mobility. It isn’t much longer than a 16” SCAR with a muzzle brake.

So, I would have a short suppressor as my only can, but they certainly have their uses and are more than a novelty.

Short cans are LOUD.

If they weren't, no body would be able to sell cans almost twice as long.

Just think about that....

They are, very noticeable when they are shot next to "regular size" cans.

While shooting the Quiet Riot PRS match last year, one of the guys in my squad had a short can (~5"). That thing was obnoxious to be beside.

Probably way more obnoxious than my fat bastard brake. I should probably just stick with that and not buy a can at all.

So I ROed the Rampage this last weekend and saw a good selection of suppressors. One was an ultra 5 and at least one ultra 7. After listening to them with foam plugs in I decided that I am definitely going with the 5. The reason is that they were both very easy to sit next to and spot for so I might as well shave off the extra 2 inches. Thanks for all the input everyone.

Great info guys. I just bought one (ultra 5) yesterday. The wait begins...also, like most of you I already have a couple of cans and wanted something a little handier for hunting and short barreled stuff.
