Rifle Scopes Going from ATACR to VCOG?

Hi all,

Currently I have an ATACR 1-8 mounted to my Knights SR15 on a NF ultra mount at 1.54”. I like the scope a lot but I’ve been told the VCOG 1-8 has better eye relief and FOV. I recently just picked up a new HK MR556 which is on order. I was debating maybe getting another LPVO for the HK or putting a dot magnifier on my Knights and putting the LPVO on the HK. I’m wondering if the VCOG is better, worse, or the same as an ATACR. I’m struggling to decide what kind of optic to use on the new HK when it arrives. What I like about the VCOG is that it has an integrated mount, and I’d probably option for the SOC version for the Christmas tree reticle (which I like on the ATACR). What do you all think? Currently I also run a T2 on a 300blk SBR as well. I’ve only within the last year gotten into and learned to appreciate a good LPVO but damn they are pricey.

I have not personally used it, but from what I have read up on, the vcog is the better scope aside from size and weight, which is probably minimal at the end of the day

cant go wrong with either

dog magnifier is one of my favorite setups!

I'm a big fan of Trijicon, but the ATACR is about as good as it get when it comes to tough 1-8x LPVOs. From what it looked like to me is that the VCOG is essentially an AccuPower or Credo in a coat of armor. To me, going from an ATACR to a VCOG will, at best, be a lateral move and more likely a step down. Of course, what fits you is totally subjective.

Personally, I know that the ATACR is a "better" scope, but I prefer to run an NX8 because it fits my needs better.

The best way to do it would be to run both and decide which you like better.

I run the NF Ultramount with my ATACR. Not sure how many oz that is. I’d think the ATACR set up is still lighter.
Definitely still lighter. I’m just saying the difference isn’t as much as people think when they see the VCOG is a 32oz optic without taking into account the integrated mount.

But, the 1-8 VCOG is still way too heavy at a relative ~25oz when taking into account mounts. The ATACR also has a much better reticle in my opinion. I’d pick the ATACR every time.

It is a heavy pig but I love mine, I also have a Accupower 1-8 which has basically the same reticle. Don't have a NF ATACR 1-8 but I'm sure they are nice. I also like the AA on the VCOG and the fact it's built for combat and the glass is very nice. I put my VCOG in a QD Midwestgunworks mount also as the factory "mount" isn't worthy unless you like cheap low bid on your $2k scope.

I tried the VCOG, the 1-8 to me isn’t as good as the ATACR. The 1-6 looked better for me eyebox wise. I’m debating getting the NX8 instead as my second LPVO since I can get it for a good price with the experts pricing.

Even though it’s old and flawed in some ways, the NX8 at expert pricing is a great deal.

Yeah exactly why I’d just stick with it. I am used to and like the ATACR reticle so I think of the NX8 as a budget ATACR. I’ll likely order one in a week or so. Now I just am not sure if I want to go higher than 1.5” on the mount. I almost feel like the 1.5” for my ATACR is a bit low and I even debated getting a higher mount for that as well.

Sometimes we run into optics ADD and start thinking there’s maybe something better than what we already have, when what we already have works and maybe works well. I’m not here to tell you that one may be better than the other because that is for you to decide but I’d say to try hard to get a good look at what you might be replacing ahead of time, which can be hard to do so maybe buy from a dealer that allows returns as long as you don’t bang it up and spend a few days with it doing practice drills. My 2 cents…

I was in the same boat as you and went with the Nightforce NX8 1-8x24. It’s hands down the best of both worlds with excellent glass. Lighter and more compact than the Trij, too. I’ve got mine on a Larue mount, and it’s been rock solid.

I have an ATACR 1-8, son runs a PA PLXc 1-8. I like the PA better. Glass comparable to my eyes and the the PA diappears on the gun looking through it. NF has better dot illumination. I had a VCOG for a short time. I like both the NF and PA better than the VCOG. Very subjective to the person though because all 3 would be good choices.

I have not had a chance to look through the ATACR, but I really like the 1-8x PLxC, and have one on a 14.5 BCM.

Having some fun last month, shooting at 900 yards with the sun at my back, I could see the hits and misses with the 80ELD load.

Didn’t PA just announce an update to the glass in the PLx?

The only news that I am aware of is an SFP option and daylight bright illumination?
This is what I was thinking of but I think its only the reticle…
