Maggie’s Going to Cabelas, what should I buy?

I was in the area and stopped by cabelas a couple of weeks ago. Limited reloading supplies and overpriced clothes...walked out empty handed. Their prices are not competitive. Rather support hide vendors.
I live 5 minutes from a Cabelas, go there once a week or so. If you reload bullets can be a good deal. They carry MAGPUL stuff. Cabelas brand boots are pretty good deal,( made in China) .
Clothing is great, they have REDHEAD brand clothing now, a carry over from their merge with BASS PRO SHOPS. Their guns are to expensive but every once in awhile a used gun shows up that’s a good deal( I bought a P38 for just over two hundred once). If I’m walking through Cabelas and see something I’ll price check off my phone for what online prices are. Elk burgers are excellent if there is a cafe like there is in the one I go to. Have fun

Cabelas is generally overpriced if you don’t already know what you are going in for and it’s on sale.

Every once in a while you will find a good deal in the bargain cave. I bought a full Otis Elite cleaning kit there for $50 one time. Those retail there for around $130. I have also gotten good deals in their Gun Library after talking down the salesmen. They are able to take lower than the sticker price. Other than that, I just enjoy the taxidermy. Cabelas is not about great deals, it is more of an "experience" type store.

I drank the Kool-Aid and even became a credit card carrying member of the Cabelas Club Army. Since their merger I haven’t liked a single thing they’ve done. Plan on defecting from their credit line, cashing in my Club points and going elsewhere. Worth a walk through but don’t think you are going to shooting heaven incarnate, that’s in Colorado about a mile high?.
I work within walking distance of a Bass Pro Shop. If Cabela's prices are like BPS, I would avoid it at all costs.

I have a local one here. Its a great store for the oh shit I need more primers or ammo since they always seem to have decent match ammo and reloading components in stock, but you pay out the nose for it. Ever since the merger with Bass Pro they have removed the military/veteran discount on reloading stuff, guns, ammo and that makes the store too cost prohibitive. Even with their discount you were paying a premium. I have found some great buys on used rifles. Most are overpriced junk but you find a diamond in the rough every once in awhile. Grabbed a little Savage 24C 22lr/20ga they had on the used rack at a great price. I had one as a kid and had always kept my eyes out for one but they don't show up often. Snatched that little beauty in a heartbeat.
Yeah, pretty much mirror what everyone said. If you really, really need something then that's a different story but you'll pay for it.

If you're gonna buy clothing, stay away from anything Red Head or BPS specific. It's shit.

The hunting clothing went to shit before the merger. When the company went from private ownership to publicly traded, everything changed. I grew up in Nebraska at a time when there were only two stores. Life was good. American made quality products. After going public, damn near everything was made in china and cost more! The merger with Bass pro magnified the problem.
I'm a Cabela's Club member. Great point earnings on the card, with bonus for stuff bought at Cabela's. Members also get special sale notices, and usually get a 10% coupon once a year for any item. That's how I bought my Swaro binoculars.
Decent selection of hunting specific stuff, and good deals on premium ammo when they run a sale. I always check online to compare, though. Mostly buy unusual calibers when on sale, as they do carry some hard to find stuff. Their private label optics are made by Meopta.

I had a gift card I needed to burn. They didn't have anything I needed so I picked a pound of BLC2. It was $40 out the door!

i can read all the reviews i want but for camping gear i feel the need to touch and play.

You're not wrong, but even with a 10% discount, their prices are higher than what you'll find online.
My advice is to find someone who shoots that runs a gun or supply shop. And use them. They are probably way cheaper than Cabelas, and you're supporting local who just might even be giving back to the shooting sports.

Going into the "Bargain basement" was actually a trip down stairs.
Used to pass through Grand Island back before too many people knew that Hornady was located there.
Buying seconds was super cheap and too damn heavy to carry.
We used to buy 5 gallon buckets of blems from Hornady. Took a while to sort cals. & weights, but worth it. The tour of the factory was very educational.
We have a cabelas in anchorage (3hour drive with good weather) prices are high even for Alaska, but every time I’m in anchorage I will check out the bargain cave and if my sons are with me I will show them the fish tanks. They had a hand reloading press that no one local had so I drove up there just to buy it “on sale” and still it was more than online. Come to think of it everything I’ve bought there was clearance or bargain cave. Last time I was there the girl at the register wanted to see ID to buy ammo! This might not bother most people but I got nut hairs older than these kids at the register.. and you shouldn’t have to show ID for ammo. I demanded a manager and got my ammo.

It wasn't until I was over 100 miles away did I realize the lady only charged me for half of what I bought.
I guess $2.75 per hundred wasn't too expensive.

Yes it is. Long ago I went to the bird racks in a 10' plywood I built, but humor is not a trait the USCG, admires. So I picked up an I/O 24 footer, but never caught any more fish with it vs the 10'. I think they just wanted me to spend more money?
A friend's wife bought a pistol there (Tulalip/Everett/Seattle) about 6 months ago. She successfully went through the 4473/NICS check, then Cabela's says "you will have to go through a Cabela's background check"......(If I was buying a firearm there (which I wouldn't), I would have told them to keep it and walked out). WTF ?
What I want to know is how can a non-governmental/non-law enforcement, publicly traded corporation have access to enough information to adequately satisfy their vetting of a potential purchaser ? AND, if they do have that much access, who gave it to them, how was it given to them and why ?
So, ID to purchase ammo and a "private" party background check to purchase a firearm ? Not only no, but hell no !

Keep an eye on the bargain cave stuff and some of the camping gear, for the most part I mainly use them for fishing gear since that seems to be were they are competitive and well stocked.

I was fishing for spotted sea trout last week and watched FWC run a big boat out of a no entry area. (It was a man and woman who might have been having amorous thoughts...)
They came by me a few minutes later and just waved.
The were poles that stuck out of the water 10-12 miles into the gulf west of Tampa bay. I would put in at Pine Island an head almost due west, would take about 30-45 minutes depending seas up on plane with the 24 foot. Much, much longer with the 10' Even a 100% landlubber could fill the boat out there. And sometimes with things that would eat you faster, than you could eat them if you were not careful,...LOL That was back in the early to mid 70's an the last time I was out there was 85. I would think they would be still there? Birds of all kinds would land on the racks an shit into the water which is what brought all kinds of fish. The poles were encased all around in barnacles which helped as well. Did a lot of table powder fishing, when just known guys were around, otherwise it was long lines or just rod an reels, when sport fishing.

No, verything is overpriced and the stock is limited. The online availability at their stores is dicey at best.

I've never heard anyone speak of them. Pine Island is a bit of a hike and a 17' flats boat really isn't the correct craft to head that far out.
I'll do some digging and see if they still exist.
If they do, I'll talk my buddy into bringing this to chase them.

FWC and a bunch of other groups have made a lot of reefs in the last 20 years.
All of the rubble from the old Skyway was used to make reefs too.
Charlotte Harbor has a bunch of old pilings on the north west side. Lots of mid sized goliath grouper hanging out there.

If a blow starts or if the seas get to 3-4' or better that would be an interesting ride out there, let alone closer to shore. The day the USCG hauled my ass in it was a COC day until about 1400 an by 1500 it was bad an I mean bad. Many a boat went down that day, (in experience) but to tell you the truth I was glad to see that city pull up out of no where, as when I was down between the waves I could not even see them nor them I. It was a close chop an I still had about 7-8 miles to go. Reports said most boats out past the racks were doing well if they had experience but those closer even with some, to lots of sea time, were having issue. I have a lot of respect for that water out there do to it being so shallow an wide open to wind.
Poles were similar but far more of them w/o the platform. Yes Pine Island about an hour north of Tampa. I would pick my side kick up in Brooksville an we would head over to Pine Island w/a cast net an load up on bait fish (loved getting Blue Runners) an head out. Many times we sold bait fish out there that paid for the trip, gas an such.
Nice. We've got bait boats all over the place in summer and fall.
FWC might not like people selling bait without a license.
