Shrimp aren't very easy to catch in the bay. If they were easy to catch, I'd never buy them for bait or consumption.
Closed the one in my local store a couple months ago. I'm sure due the merger with Bass Pro. Not really a damned thing worth buying there now.
The main reason I jumped the Fla boat. Either the state, Pasco co, or Dade City which we were not in, had their hands in my pocket all the time. Based upon kin still in the Dade City area, it was a wise choice.
We have one Cabela's on the ID/WA border that is pretty busy every time I've been in. As others mentioned it's only been when I needed something right away and Amazon Prime or my other go to vendors didn't have it or I needed it right away. The 'Cabela's Background Check' bullshit is enough to convince me never to darken their door though. We have a local shop, Black Sheep, that's got as much or more in the categories I care about.

Being there is only so much information a retail outlet can pull on someone.....but the most notable they can pull is credit report.
Has anyone that went through a Cabelas background check notice a credit report inquiry on their credit report?
Because this has to be approved of via signature, they just cannot pull without your consent.

I've bought a few guns at cabelas and never had an extra background check done. Whole thing sounds off to me. Not questioning anyone's honesty. It just doesn't add up to me.

I have never purchased a firearm from Cabela's, so I cannot speak from personal experience. I do however trust my friends version of what happened. I will confirm with them that they were asked to and did consent to Cabela's background check (that is where I would have punched out and told them to go screw) but I believe they probably did consent.

There are always some interesting things in the "Gun Library." Lots overpriced and silly. But I've never failed to find some amazing unicorns and even some downright bargains. But you won't know until you look. Bargains? How about an amazing German Scheutzen-mauser for $600? Or a Marbles Gamegetter? A Smith and Wesson Pinto?
But have a smartphone and verify prices. But there are always some gems.
The main thing I usually buy there is Beef Jerky-making supplies. They have tasty stuff and the prices aren't stupid.
Also, there is a 'Bargain Cave' in most of them (unless they have got rid of that.) And I've scored some nice boots, moccasins, some ATV bits... for short money. But it's always impulse stuff. Some bargain air rifles usually in the Bargin cave... open box returns. Nice stuff for 1/2 price.

NO, there is nothing you can waste your money on there that you can not buy less expensively on the Internet. But...hey, knock yourself out.
I agree on the gun library. Found a 40x there for cheap. Priced like a model 700.
I worked at cabelas right out of highschool and off and on durring college. We had a dream team behind the gun counter but its definatly gone down hill since, and on a bigger scale I think it took a nose dive after bass pro took over. I did get a savage 12fv for my wife a couple years ago for $219. But other than that its really more for your wife/girlfriend to look at the stuffed animals, take the oportunity to buy what you want while she is distracted. Sadly youll have to watch out for the lurkers behind most box store gun counters.

1 lb bag of Jack links jerky, $16-20 depending on the sale...I usually walk out with at least one of these.
They're not all bad. They have some redeemable qualities. They sell a lot of gun related stuff including those bad AR15s. They usually have a decent selection and stock of many things gun related. They have some decent fishing gear and related items. They have a great selection of camping gear. And the best part, if they have it, you can get it today.
I dislike the merger. And I don't think they're the end all either. Prices are usually higher but it's in stock. The people working there, while maybe not experts, are nice and generally helpful.

pretty happy with their warranty policy. just today they said they will replace a 2 yr old set of winter gloves that are falling apart. of course, they shouldn't have been falling apart... they also sent me a box of two rolls of vacuum pack bags after i noted the ones i got were pretty wrinkled and were hard to seal (again, shouldn't have been wrinkled).
They allowed me to return a kayak after using it for a week or two. Called up and asked what my options were as I really hated the one I bought. They said bring it back. I did and I bought another. And then thousands of $$ on fishing gear and kayak gear.

Bought a rifle on Jan 1st of this year. Just the regular 'ol BC check. And zero hits on my credit report. Not that I filled out anything extra either.
Even match their online price which appeared to be a mistake. Not sure why everyone hates on them so much. Not the cheapest, not the best. But a viable option if and when needed. And they support our community by providing what is now considered "sensitive" items like bullets and guns. All my local Walmarts stopped carrying rifles.
Very cool store, I had a good time, but didn't spend a lot. Got some 338 lapua dies, Hornady reloading book, some nice cheap shoes. Lots of people willing to help me. Good place to hold stuff before buying it online. Asked if they had any old colts, and the sales guy brings out of an office by the gun room an engraved python that just came in yesterday that the price seems to good to be true. I may go back and buy it tomorrow morning after I do some research tonight to make sure its legit. Letter from colt says its factory engraved, and the sales guy says it appears unfired, but they are only asking $4000 for it. Seems way to good of a deal.
I've lots of extra stuff srored in my yard as I'm 6 feet above the damn but many lower(some within 300yds of me) ain't so lucky. An late tonight the wind an twisters are supposed to come in. If that happens many a tree will come down do to soaked ground. All my shit is ready, yellow iron, chain saws, ect.
This A/O did this drill in 2015, was not fun, but everyone pitched in like always.

We have a pussy'/dicksporting and field and stream local. PRICE MATCH! I dont like the store as a whole but i dont like hazmat charges either. I have local gun shops i cirlce but when they dont have what i want and they dont want to order something i will go to field and stream and price match the shit outt stuff. Those plano all weather cases usually they will price match a 150 case for $80 bucks. use it to your advantage.
I’ll go and check their reloading items but our Sportsman’s Warehouse has triple the amount of reloading stuff and they’ll beat cabelas by 5% on any item. When BPS purchased Cabelas, ours got rid of the bargain cave. That is what I went in there the most for.

Cabelas makes their money from their credit cards. They have their own bank. There is a quota so to speak. You are suppose to apply for their CC upon hiring, its not mandatory but highly pushed by management. They have training classes on how to sell CC. Management would rather lose a $2000 single sale if a CC was approved. They will make more over time from the CC than a single sale. $2000 purchase on a new CC is what they are after. They do have what is called during a gun purchase as a pre approved CC sale. Cant say how they get there. Quite a few fudd types working their gun counter. I actually over heard a sales clerk say what do you need one of those for to hunt, down by the AR rack. I have seen 3 clerks behind their counter standing and watching videos on the computer with customers down by the AR rack. When asked, take a number to get help. Customer walks down pulls a number, the clerk yells 24 or what ever with the customer right in from of him. I have heard, do you have a number, take number with customer at their counter wanting to see a gun. WOW. Last time at Cabelas I took the wife after dinner walk is all, that about all visits to walk and check things out and after a couple minutes in clothing she came over and said lets go, I am tired being asked if I am a cabela club CC member, already 5 times and no one offered help, just CC, she said no, they walked away to find someone else,
I prefer SW, quite a bit cheaper, every time I am asked if I am a vet for discount even on sale items they offer it, cabelas I have to ask and no on ammo or guns. Not that I demand it or expect it its the difference in business connection to veterans. Ammo and reloading at SW is twice to three times what Cabelas has on their shelves. SW donates quite a bit more to local grass roots groups than Cabelas. Cabelas is clean and fancy and SW is well a warehouse.

They have nothing to offer me, if I need something I look at local guys first but in all honesty, they really lack is product unless you trade funs, lots of junk collected over the years is why I shop SW.
But Alaska does not have a real personalized gun shop, too hard and expensive. Most are over priced, I stopped in to get a crush washer and they guy wanted $9, I can order 3 for that with free shipping here in 3 days. So I use the interweb more now, I know what I want these days, yes the local can order but at full MSRP plus shipping and it takes a couple weeks Vs a couple days, I hate where retail is going but it is what it is.

Cabelas upper end fly rods are well worth the money and have a 25 yr otherwise. The Alaskan guide and instinct tents are solid. Outside of that, bargain cave and used guns...once got a set of Simms chest waders for $200 in the cave instead of $450 othrrwise.
I hate the fact that Cabelas enforces NJ bullshit unconstitutional gun laws. As a store, they should only be concerned with servicing their customer not helping NJ police its citizens that make the trek to their store. Bullshit like asking where I'm from then denying magazine sales due to them not being NJ compliant. Its none of their fucking business what I do. I have a big problem with cabbalas. If they open a NJ location and I'm in it, then fine (sorta) but I'm in PA or DE they should n't give a flying fuck about NJ laws. That s my issue to either be compliant or not.
States with those type laws have been pretty vindictive to nationwide companies. A PA gunstore that only sells in PA might have a chance, but Cabela's has a NJ presence due to their mail order/internet business. Makes them liable for the law.

I’ve bought dozens of firearms from Cabelas, the most recent was right before Christmas. I’ve never filled out any different background checks, given or been asked for permission for a credit check, asked for ID for any purchases of magazines or anything. They do ask for a DOB for ammo purchases, but that seems standard basically anywhere now.
The only thing they do that I don’t care for is to ask your phone number while checking out, I asked the reason for this many years ago and was told it was to track your trending purchases. They don’t send me specific advertisements and sales for what I typically buy, so I opt out of giving that info. I’m sure they can do the same by looking at my cabelas card statement, but I’d rather not have a store tracking my ammo purchases, etc every time I shop there. Even if lately they’ll only see an obscene amount of beef jerkey being bought.
I’m not a cabelas fanboy, but I’m 20 minutes from their Dundee, MI store...I’ve got some great deals on items in their gun library and bargain cave, and buy their gift cards on eBay for 20% off. Couple those with the 5% rewards points, their typical 10% off sales...you can usually get some great deals if you aren’t in a huge rush.

They (cabelas) probably figures if their store is located far away from a blur state then they don't mind. I love in NJ and go to the cabbalas in both DE and PA. I bought a Beretta shotgun from cabelas in PA and it was kinda a pain just like in NJ

Retailers ask for your phone number and zip codes for marketing purposes. They run reports to see how many customers are from area / zip codes to know where to send out ad flyers and such. A monthly report is built in a spreadsheet with all transactions and zip codes. There is a bogus or not valid column and column for not provided. If low customers shopping from certain area / zip codes, they try to find why, how to get more customers to shop there from those areas and how same thing for area / zip codes with high customers. Also if they see enough customer traffic from an area they can decide to open new stores in that area. They have a store in Texas but are getting 10% of customers from OK, they can do the research to see opening a new store in OK would be profitable. There are companies who track this but asking at check out is free and first hand not to mention company secret.
Phone numbers are also used to search transactions for warranty and returns.
