Good .223 DMR/MPVO Optic These Days?

Hey all,

I know this question has been asked a couple times and I've been reading through some recent threads, but hoping for folks with experience on a few of these optics to chime in. In short I have a proven 20" SAMR-ish .223 gun that I love but just haven't shot much in the past few years.

So I pilfered the old school mildot SWFA 3-9 I had on it and ending up selling that along with a .308 bolt gun to a buddy getting into hunting.

Well I'd like to get an optic back on the rifle and I figured there's probably something out there these days for around $1K that'd have some nice updates compared to the old reliable SWFA. And wouldn't you know it there's just as many trade off's now as there was back then.

I'd be curious if anyone had any $.02 on my considerations here or if I'm missing something I'd appreciate it. Use case is primarily a bit of target shooting, coyote hunting, and maybe a gas gun match from time to time.

Things I like (for this gun):

FFP
2-10x-ish magnification
Length around 13" or less
Weight around 25oz or less
Illumination
Zero Stops / Locking Turrets
Not super busy reticles
Adjustable Parallax (nice to have but not required for this gun)

Things I don't like (for this gun):
Unreliable things
Heavy / Long Scopes
Super busy reticles / should be hunter friendly

I have a range for sure but this is what I'm considering:

_________________________________________

Leupold Mark 4HD M5C3 FFP TMR Illuminated
~$1000

My initial replacement thought. Love the size/weight, features, reticle is acceptable for me.
Concerned about tracking and reliability based on Rokslide tests for the money. Conflicting reports on glass quality for the price.

_________________________________________

Steiner H6Xi 2-12x42mm STR-MIL FFP
~$1500

Love the size/weight, features, glass is probably excellent, bit spendy (diminishing returns?)
Reticle is a bit busy for me and feel it might get lost hunting

_________________________________________

Trijicon Credo 2-10x36 FFP w/ Red MRAD
~$1000

Good size/weight if just a touch long, Japanese glass
Reticle a bit busier than I'd like, unsure if better that the Leupy for the same price?

_________________________________________

Athlon Helos BTR GEN2 2-12x42mm AHMR2 FFP IR MIL
~$400

Like the size/weight, features, generally like the reticle, ranging capability is really cool, cheap means more money rolled into scope on a different rifle faster, or less buyer's remorse if someone ever comes out with a banger MPVO.
Don't love a 1 MOA dot, biggest concerns is on quality and reliability, glass is said to be OK, seems like a dice roll.

_________________________________________

Vortex PST Gen 2 2-10x FFP Mil
~$750

Like the size/weight, generally like the reticle, cheaper than other options, Vortex warranty
Discontinued/Somewhat Hard To Find, glass said to be OK

_________________________________________

Bushnell LRTSi 3-12 FFP
~$800?

Like the weight, a touch long, G3 tree is ok, said to have great Japanese glass, should have bought one years ago during the blow out.
Discontinued/ Very Hard To Find, read a few horror stories about Bushnell warranties on these and replacing them with worse options

Maven RS1.2 - 2.5-15x44 FFP
$~1100

Excellent performance in Rokslide tests, Good glass, good hunting reticle, great magnification range
Definitely a long boy, a touch on the heavy side, temptation to slap on a bolt-gun hunting rifle instead

I got the opportunity to compare the MK4 ffp and sfp at the range and the glass looked good on both. No issues with tracking, and was amazed how well they preformed from 100 to 600 yards with a fixed parallax.
It helped me to decide to get the sfp for myself.

Rockslide are the folks that said the March 4.5-28 was a piece of shit with shitty glass and wouldn't hold zero.
Check out the Athlon 3-18.
The swampfox 2-12 might be worth a look.
The new vortex 3-15 seems pretty good, though I think Athlon does a better job with their Chinese optics.
GPO might have something to pique your interest. Maybe @gr8fuldoug can shed some light.

Haha well I’ve crept around the Hide for over a decade and know enough to listen when you speak. Thanks!
I wouldn't got that far... lots of learned shooters here and even on Rocks Lide I imagine, just that many of us have discussed the efficacy of their drop tests and have come up with some concerns, early on in the debate those concerns were largely ignored and they just keep doing what they're doing. That's not to say that there are some dud scopes out there, or that the slides tests are complete bunk, just take them with a grain of salt and see if there are trends in the rest of the community... if three people get on every thread and talk about how horrible scope X was then it's something to keep in mind but could just be noise within the larger community as a whole. If thirty people are saying a scope is trash now it's time to raise an eyebrow and if posts keep coming up from different people saying the same now we're seeing a trend. Also keep in mind that manufacturers will often make incremental changes over time, often first release scopes tend to have the most issues, I've seen it from almost every brand (including NF) and most manufacturers learn from those early QC or design flaws and correct them...

didn't review all the specs, but vortex 1-6 razor hd2 is a pretty nice piece of glass and very popular in 2-3 gun matches where we shoot out to 500 or so yards. i believe they did a 1-8 and currently 1-10 if you need more magnification. i have the jm bdc reticle which couldn't be any simpler, but they also have moa and mil.

Well I'm awfully glad I decided to ask. I'm frankly kinda leaning towards a BTR GEN2 2-12x42mm just to go ahead and get some glass back on the gun.

I generally try and go with at least a LOW scope these days and avoid anything Chinese, but frankly I'm not seeing a reticle / glass combinations otherwise that get me really excited. Maybe there's an optic I'm missing, but seems like the Athlon performs pretty decent for the price and I probably won't get too beat up on it waiting for Steiner or the other big players around the 1 - 2K price to figure out a proper MPVO reticle.

EDIT: The GPOCENTURI 4-16x44i Super Compact has my attention too now - at least on paper. Anyone got one?

Get the HG2 2-12 and next year when the other companies figure out MPVO reticles you can put the HG2 on a 22rf or hunting rifle. You'll like that big dot more than you ever thought you would especially if you aren't on 12x all the time.

That Ares BTR G3 2.5-15 is also a great option for AR's but in a different way, and the quality is way higher than the price should allow for. I had two Bushnell LRHS 3-12's and for me it didn't work out. Without expounding I prefer the Ares G3 much more and until something similar comes out that has daylight bright illume I'm not looking elsewhere.

I haven't decided which one I like more, I prefer the 2-12 on low magnification/2x-3x for speed, and the 2.5-15 for precision at distance on higher magnification but with the reticle plenty usable by 3.5x at .06 MIL line thickness.
