Looking for recommendations for a new quality .308 die set for factory chamber remington 700 LTR.

Looking at Redding 3 die match FL set. Give me some advice!

Thanks guys,

1+ on the Redding Competition die. They are awesome. But any regular die will be capable to producing good ammo.

In my experiece and on average, any brand of dies will work as well as any other in a factory rifle's chamber. Sorta meaning they are all quite good dies.

I know there is some hate, but I use Lee Dies and never had an issue.

I plan on getting a micrometer type seating die, but other than that the Lee 3-die set is good to go. If you even go with a semi-auto the Factory Crimp Die is good to have.

I like redding but if you want to be a lil more frugal the rcbs competition die sets are nice also. The old ones had clicks the newer ones dont have the clicks and have an o ring.
.
They also are no longer shipped with an extended shell holder.
.
Works well for my 700 5r as well as two 700 sporters in 308. (Mine and Dads)

I have a RCBS Competition Seater (the one with the window), a Lee collet neck die, and a Redding body die. That's my preferred "set".

Re: Good .308 Die Set for Factory Remington Chamber

Thanks guys,

I'm mainly looking at minimal run out. I don't mind dropping the coin for good dies but don't want to spend the money if the benefit is minimal.

I like to draw from other's experiences. I've been reloading for nearly 20 years but my knowledge regarding super consistent ammo is lacking.

Keep it coming,

Thanks,

"I'm mainly looking at minimal run out."

I suppose it's safe to say we all look for that. Sad to say, it takes a LOT more than simply buying a specific brand of dies to achieve that. Fact is, there is as much variation between dies of the same maker as between makers!

Most run-out comes from defective case necks and no fancy seater can correct for that. Good cases, with good necks, properly sized for minimun neck run-out and not undersized more thnn one, maybe two at most, thou and seated in tightly fitted die that holds the full length of the case (meaning Forster or Redding) dies will do as well as can be done.

Even with all that, it will require testing each loaded round and culling non-concentic cases as neccessary.

For our deliberately loose, sloppy factory chamber necks I strongly suggest neck sizing with a Lee collet neck die and use a body/shoulder bump die instead of an FL die. Don't bother with any "bushing" neck dies, they were developed for tight BR chambers and precisely neck turned cases but that ain't us! Lee's simple die gives the straighest necks with the least fuss of any I've tried, and I've tried most! (Well, I haven't tried Hornady's bushing dies but...?)

918v,

After research, it appears your setup is in line with a lot of people. I'm leaning that way now.

It seems most everywhere are currently out of stock of the RCBS competition die right now.

They have the "Gold Medal" match seater bushing die in stock but the standard competition seater die is out of stock for now. Is there an advantage to using the bushing die over the standard competition seater? It is a little over $30 more.

Re: Good .308 Die Set for Factory Remington Chamber

It has a floating bullet searer stem. The standard one has it fixed to the micrometer. It don't make a bit of difference. Runout is largely caused by defective brass, not seater features.
