Good AR-10 load????

I have a friend that just got a AR-10 I will get more info on it if needed. What are some of the good loads you guys shoot?

Although it's for an M1A, it should be a decent ballpark load for your AR-10.

Rem brass, F/L resized, F/H reamed.
175SMK, OAL 2.815". This length is intended as maximum to feed from the magazine.
42.2gr IMR-4064.
Match primer, CCI BR-2 and Fed Gold Medal Match 210M are both good, be certain that they are seated flush or below flush.

In the M1A, it's designed to be Supersonic at 1000yd.

Good for what???

Hunting? (if so...hunting what?)
Target/Steel/etc.? Range?
Plinking?

Also, the loads will depend on what the specs are on your friend's rifle.

Still working up a final load, but BL-C2 under 175 SMK seems to be showing promise.

Bumping this. I'd like some info as well...going to be doing some accuracy testing over Thanks Giving. Would like to test at 100 yds, then we might set up and shoot some 800 or even 1000yd shots. Rifle is Armalite AR10T stainless 20" Lothar, and I also have a 16" SASS. I have some FGMM 168's, and would also like to reload some. Any input would be appreciated.
Best place to buy SMK bullets? 168's or 175's? (maybe both?)
Can the FGMM recipe be duplicated?

My favorite loads are 46-46.7gr Varget in Winchester brass under 155gr Scenars fired by BR2s. I load them to 2.845" OAL which puts them about .010" from the lands in my AR10's 21" Noveske barrel. I've never had issues with the length causing feeding issues either, but remember that the AR10 uses modified M14 mags. If you're using the DPMS or other platforms but referring to them generically as AR10s then I have no clue how long you can load in those mags.

Thanks for that Falar. I'm having a hard time getting some BR prmers (like every one else I guess)...only have standard LR primers. Where does that leave me?

If you think a Match primer in a Semi-auto is going to make a dif, your looking in the wrong direction for accuracy.

I will tell you, that ANY primer, mag, LR, Match who cares goes bang in a AR-10 / LR-308.

Run what you can get.

Get some 135 SMKs to load, they shoot great. 300 yards is short range that 168s or 175s are not needed. Besides, the 135s may even be cheaper.

Oh, dang Nez -- now I gotta get some of those 135s -- I didn't even know Sierra made them!

I think they'll be great from an AR-10 Carbine.

how far have you pushed the 135's? I might try these out. Any advice for powder in a 16" AR-10 with a Carbine gas system?

I been loading Federal Brass, 168 gr BTHP Sierra Matchkings with 41 gr powder just starting working on the loads with H4895 powder and CCI BR-2 primers, with OAL 2.810 and they run good at 100 yards is all I've got to shoot them at with it raining so much here but my LR seems to love them

Re: Match Primers, I do my load development in these days of match primer scarcity with standard (non-match) primers. Once the load is 'finalized', I try match primers to see if they make a difference. As often as not, they don't and I take it as a freebie. I good load with a broad node shouldn't need them.

I'm shooting 155 palma match kings, 45.4 of RL-15. FL size and trim to 2.005 Loaded out to 2.800. In my LR-308 24" I'm getting anywhere from 2740 to 2790. This is using Black Hills match brass as well as Hornady match with winchester primers. At least out om my gun it's a .5 moa load. 155's in a 1-10 twist??? but it works.

Interesting, I'm shooting:
41.5 gr Re 15
Rem 9 1/2
Mag length
Win brass
175SMK

and it's accurate as all hell out to 600, but I chronographed it today and average velocity is only 2451fps. Which explains the 16 MOA to get to 600 yards.
It seems like the rifle is overfunctioning, it chucks brass six to eight feet to the side and six feet back. Wouldn't more powder/higher velocity exacerbate this? Or is it normal?

With my load it chucks the brass about the same. I have shot some M118 stuff a friend of mine gave me and if I recall it spit the cases about the same. Have you tried any of the lighter bullet offerings? I had bought 155 matchkings just to give em a shot and they seem to work. I loaded up some 168 nosler custom competition last night with 44.3 of RL-15, load out of the hornady book.

I don't, I just use .003" neck tension. My loads are compressed also, so those bullets cannot and will not set back.

May I ask what twist you have. I'm interested in the 135's as well in my AR10 as well as my bolt guns. All of mine are 1:11.25. Will the 135s work well in short ranges? 200-300 meters? That's all I'm looking to shoot for now.

This is a good question as I just finish building one. Mine is a Noveske lower, JP Rifles trigger group, and the upper is an Armalite 24" with 1:11.5" twist(according to the old cleaning rod/tape twist check method it is 1:11.625").

The most accurate ammo I found for it so far was old Federal Gold Medal Match 155gr BTHP cartrides. This is the stuff in the white striped box with the blue bar on the left side of the box. Too bad I can't get it any more.

However this rifle is the sole reason I will be getting into reloading so I will be watching this forum like a hawk.

My AR-10 shoots nicely with 168 gr Sierra BTHP with a 18 inch 1:12 barrel. Not got to shoot over 100 yards from all our rain and lack of time, but drives tacks a 100 so eager to see longer range

I'm using the sierra 175g hpbt with 41 grains of re-15, bullet seated out to mag length in new win. brass. This load works great to 550 yrds and I'm sure it will be fine to longer ranges, just haven't had a chance to shoot furhter. I would also suggest using 155 scenars. This bullet gave me outstanding groups under a 1/2 moa at 100 yrds, but for some reason they didn't chamber very well in my rifle. So I switched back to 175's. I'm getting 3/4 moa with these loads. Using a factory armalite ar-10t

For some reason my rifle just does not like anything 168gr and up. The tightest I can get with the Federal GMM 168gr @ 100yds is 1 inch.

I am looking at trying the Scenars in the 155gr flavor though.

Try BIB 134 gr. Flat Base Bullet

Very accurate at 100 and 200 yds

In my rifle on a rest and 44.4 gr N 140 powder < 1/4 moa.

You don't need anything more than 135 Grain Benchrest FB bullets for accuracy loads at short range. Try what Fx77 suggested. 4064 or n140 in the 44 =/- grain range should do it.

May I ask is this an LR-308? I just bought one and while working on my basic zero round I base loaded some 42gr Varget under 168 gr SMK. And to put it in a kind gentle way it sucked!! I know it wasn't me because I shot my Rem700PSS today at the same time and shot 3/8" groups from 43.5gr Varget. Thanks for the help.

I loaded the 42's up just to have something to zero my LR-308 and my 700PSS. It shot pretty darn good out of the 700 (to my amazement) but wouldn't pattern as good as my 12 ga at 100 yards from my LR-308. The 700's sweet spot was the 43.5 but it still shot MOA with the 42's. The LR-308 group was about an inch wide but spreaded 1.5" top to bottom. Do you have a preferred AR-10 load?
