Hello All!

I've been lurking this forum for a few weeks now, mainly optic for sale forum. I just purchased a savage 10ba. I'm brand new to long range shooting and to high end optics. Even though i just dropped 1450 on a gun i find myself not wanting to pull the trigger on a scope quite yet. I've been considering the weaver tactical (up to 15 power) and the Sightron Siii (up to 24 power.) This gun will be 90% shooting paper either at a range or target shooting at a ranch. The other 10% will be varmint shooting. I dont really see myself doing any competition shooting and I dont see myself shooting much past 600-700 yards often or at all, although i'm sure i'll stretch my legs at some point or another and try 1000 just to say I did it. Now on to my idea. What are your thoughts on buying a Nikon Monarch 4-16X42 with mildots and purchasing the 1/4 high pro turrets for tactical purposes. Based on average shooting of 100-400 yards and shooting mostly in the middle of the day would this be a good buy or should i just pony up and get a weaver tactical or sightron? I think i can get the Nikon for 460 including the turrets or should i spend the 650 for the Weaver? Does the Monarch's track well? I logic is to save 200 and just buy more ammo. Also i've decided against any fixed power scopes.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Good Idea?

I know quite a few people have that Nikon and like it. I like a 30 mm tube myself so i would wait and get something else but, i think through Nixon would be fine also. I find most people upgrade scopes far more than rifles

Re: Good Idea?

I bought the same Monarch scope to put on my wife's .223 for prairie dog hunting. So far, we've had it out to 600 yards and back to it's 100 yard zero, in varying winds up to 20mph, many times. It's always returned to zero and given us what we've asked of it. The glass is great for the price and I don't have any real complaints about it. Now, if you're looking for something a little more "tactical", you may want to find a scope with matching turrets/reticle and if a FFP scope is what you're after, spend the extra money on the Weaver, or perhaps a Bushnell or Vortex Viper PST (I have a Bushnell 4200 Elite mil/mil FFP and love it). In short, the Nikon will do the job, but for a little more you can get some extra features that come in handy.
