I had to dig out my N100 dust masks from painting the house long time ago. I live in a very populated area in Los Angeles. 27 confirmed cases in my neighborhood. So it's better than nothing when I go grocery shopping.

I'm using them now, because I'm using my wood saws and my sander. If there's virus particles in the sawdust, they're helping; but otherwise..., no bets.

I am in the medical field, I have plenty of food, plenty of ammo, and zero masks. Our hospital is extremely short on PPE as are most other hospitals. Our staff has no choice but to get up close and personal with people who are visibly sick, bleeding, coughing, vomiting, etc. You don't have any obligation to do so. Nobody is hoarding anything, there just simply aren't enough to go around due to the increased number of patients across the country. Many local businesses (construction and tattoo) have donated masks to us and several hospitals are allowing staff to wear home made cloth masks because that is the only option. All of that being said, a regular surgical mask (which is what most people wear) is to protect the patient from the provider and does not prevent the wearer from breathing in particles and/or droplets. The N95 masks can be effective, but most will not don them properly, rendering them useless anyway. Calm down man, there is not a conspiracy against you.

I regard about ANY government with the same level of trust... If the government told me that water is wet, I am not going to believe it until I test it multiple times. That is about how much "trust" I have in governments.

That said, I remember when the media was telling everybody that masks do not not work and to stop purchasing them.

And I believe that 98% of the public reacted in the same way. Almost everybody is wearing masks now. The government's "advice" basically fell on deaf ears, which is a good sign that rational thinking is still present in our population.

Think about it, even with the most flimsiest of surgical masks, you are placing a barrier over your face and mouth. Without this barrier, ANYTHING can enter your mouth and nose completely unhindered. With a mask, you have a solid and tangible wall to stop A LOT of things from coming into direct contact with you. And having ANY kind of barrier is much better on multiple orders of magnitude than having none at all. No mask can prevent infection by 100%, but having one GREATLY reduces your chances of being infected, by anywhere from 50 to 98 percent...

So these freaks in government had actually tried to tell us that having a solid barrier over the most vulnerable parts of our faces cannot protect us? "Stop buying masks"??? SUCK MY DICK. I bought a shit ton of additional N95's before they all got neckbearded and price-gouged and gave a lot of them to those who are less mobile and more vulnerable. Fuck the government and their "advice". Those who had been stupid enough to believe in government horseshit are now finding themselves with no masks and almost no food in their pantries left.

One of the good things about this pandemic is that once it is over, those who survive will hopefully never trust anything that comes out of the government's ass again. I always tell folks to follow the EXACT OPPOSITE of whatever the "official" sources say. Government is telling you not to hoard or panic buy? Start shopping and stocking up on essentials IMMEDIATELY. Government is telling you that you do not need a gun? Yes, you really need a gun now...

ETA: In China, masks were REQUIRED for any outdoor activity during the pandemic. Not only to keep yourself from getting sick but to keep everybody around you from catching your shit if you have it and have no symptoms. The Chinese supermarkets here in NYC are now doing the same thing as had been done in Wuhan and Shanghai. Line up. Get sprayed down with alcohol. Bring your own mask and gloves or grab a surgical mask from the dispenser. ONE, ASSHOLE... Not a handful. Now you can enter...
