Good SKS price?

I guy I work with has an sks he just let me borrow out of the blue. I was quite content with my two bolt action rifles until I started messing with this thing. He said he would sell it to me for "500 or 600" (thats rifle + about 1000 rounds).

I just bought an s2000 so I dont have much money to spend on shooting and didnt know if this was a deal or not. Its not that I like the sks more than an ak but I dont really know how attainable either are.

Well, like AKs, ARs and other rifles...not all SKS were created equal. Do you have any specifics on the rifle (country of origin, condition, etc.)? For example, a Yugo/Zastava SKS can be had in excellent to like new condition for around $300. I can also tell you that 1k rounds of 7.62x39 will run you around $220 (give or take depending on where you get it).

Just based on that and not knowing any specifics, I'd say $500 or so would be "fair" but not a "deal" by any means.

You can get SKS and AK rifles about as easy as you can ARs and other rifles. They are plentiful, although SKS rifles aren't as abundant as they were years ago.

I agree $500 is OK for a retail store but I think you could do beterr elsewhere. Just my 2 cents.

for my sks i paid $200 unless it has a new stock or anything for 1000 rounds and the gun i wouldnt pay more than $400

I bought a 1954 Tula original, not rearsenaled, for $300. Mint condition, numbers matching. The only SKS I would consider paying $500 for would be a Chinese SKS-D that uses real 30 round AK mags. $300 - 350 is very common for a decent SKS.

A few years back I bought a SKS-D with (9) 30 round ak mag's and 1K in ammo for 500. The rifle had the stock cut (skeletized) to reduce the weight and the barrel cut to 16" and threaded for a AR-15 birdcage. I think I got a good deal on these one. The gun runs great.

I paid $125 for my SKS. The trigger feels like its full of sand, but you barely notice that since you're so focused on how much its crept and not fired yet.

But if you can work through that, it shoots the cheap wolf ammo more accurately than any rifle I've ever owned. It will hit a shotgun shell at 100yds more often than not with iron sights and wolf 7.62x39mm.

Figure $200 for 1000 rounds of ammo in 7.62x39mm, so he's asking $300 to $400 for the rifle only.

I just sold my sks to a "friend" for $275. It was in like new condition, not sure of the specifics other than the sling had chinese writing on it and it wasn't stamped norinco.

Current Reasonable Average Retail Prices
Norinco goes for 400 NIB. 250-350 used depending on condition.

Yugo goes for 299 NIB. 250 used.

Russian goes for 600 NIB 400-550 used depending on condition.

Romanian 275-375 depending on condition.

You can get them all cheaper than the above if you look around.

The Yugo dose not have a chrome lined barrel, so you have to wash it good after shooting corrosive surplus ammo.

Russian and Norinco are better as far as SKS's are concerned.
Also look around and you can find Norinco SKS's that accept AK mags from the factory, model SKS-D & SKS-M they go for about 500-550.

Depends on the type of ammo he has as to whether the price is ok. If its a yugo rifle with yugo surplus, I wouldn't touch it.

Thanks for the info everybody. I've got a numbers matching Romanian in good condition. It has a couple different receiver covers for mounting optics, a couple mags, and a muzzle brake. I'm trying to get the most out of it to put towards an AK.

Don't use a receiver cover to mount your optic on an SKS. It will never hold zero good. The two best options are to either use a scout mount that replaces the rear sight leaf or a drill and tap a mount on the side of the receiver

I collect SKS rifles. I cant explain how it all started except I like them a LOT better than M1 carbines (M2's are fun).

$500 for a run of the mill SKS is high. Your average Chinese SKS runs $200 to $450 for a "D" or "M" model that accepts standard AK mags. Russian SKS's in un-molested original condition average around $375 with the price changing on condition or rarity.

If its a 1949 Russian or the more exotic NVA / North Kores gun grab it. The holy grail is the East German SKS that I have yet to acquire.

Just sold a "unfired" Yugo SKS in awesome original shape with the bayonet and grenade launcher sights for $325.

I seem to remember buying a heavily cosmoline coated Chinese SKS in the early 1990s for about $50. I cleaned it with brake cleaner and shot it till it smoked and was hot enough to use as a branding iron. Wood cases of corrosive ammo with something like 1200 or 1400 rounds in two spam cans could be had for next to nothing.

With Wolf ammo 3" at 100 yards is typical. For anything more accurate its time to reload or find some Lapua ammo which is painfully expensive.

Maybe "I like" instead of "good" should be the term used. SKS's are good for there intended purpose. Minute of Man gun that works almost all the time within 200 yards. I find most SKS's capable of better accuracy than most AK's. I find the quality of a nice SKS better than most stamped AK's. SKS's are awesome truck guns. 7.62x39 soft point = someone or some animal has had a bad day.
If I'm in a less than 200 yard scenario, the 7.62x39 is a better round to me than 5.56. 100-400 5.56 will be ok, but I would rather have 7.62x51. An SKS is nice for defending your property. Just my opinion.
A lot of people knock the SKS. It was a good design for 1945.

My father bought a Russian 3 months ago for 375 in rough condition. He had to refin the stock but now it is slick. I have a numbers matching Russian that was used but near mint paid 400 a year ago for what its worth.

I picked up a norinco for $150 back in 06'. I went to a gun show recently and the prices seem to be between $250-$500 depending on make and condition of course. I wish I would have picked up a few more along with some ak's back then because the prices are way higher now.

Man, 20 years ago these things were $60. You'd walk into any gun store and there would be about a dozen in a barrel all getting dinged up against each other.
