Ok. I purchased my savage 10 fcp-sr prob 5 months ago. Saw it, did quick research on it and handled it, went home, went back next day and got it. Couldn't pass it up. I've been wanting a LR/hunting rifle, so I'm happy. I've looked at prob 600-700 scopes. I dot know what to do. I do know, I want a Leupold. Now which? I really wanna spend a grand or less, well I have to. I want something that I can do 100 yds, but also reach out to 1000. I was in the marine corps, an had a chance to shoot with snipers on a range one day. They use a 10x fixed. We were shooting a flag pole 880 yds out. So I know a 10x is capable of reaching the 1000 mark. Which would you recommend for my savage in that price range? You can def throw in other recommendations, I'm open. Also, I prefer mildot.

Re: Got a headache looking...

Not a Leupold, but I prefer the Vortex Viper PST line of optics. They are under a grand and very nice for the price.

Re: Got a headache looking...

If your heart is set on Leupold, then get one. The good thing about the Leupold is you can buy used and it still is covered by the same lifetime warranty as a new one.

Do some research and look at all of the turret, retical, mag options available and decide which one you want. A used MK 4 is the most likely candidate.

Then scour SWFA sample list http://www.samplelist.com/ViewProducts.aspx

and the Snipers Hide Optics thread http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=21&page=1

Keep checking each day like you are waiting for promotion results.

I have found optics here on the hide for a very good price, folks tend to sell for what "they" would want to pay for the item. You rarely see price gouging here. Optics that are over priced will quickly get buried behind the pages. Stuff moves quickly though, so use some tech savvy and set up an xml alert or other keyword flagging.

With a little patience you will get your scope.

Good luck.

Re: Got a headache looking...

DO NOT buy a scope with a Mil Dot reticle and MOA knobs, in the less than 1k offerings there are few choices, but a Super Sniper 10x HD is a good choice, as is the Vortex Viper PST 4-16, of the two the Vortex is a better choice based on resale value and variable powder.

Re: Got a headache looking...

427cobra, please explain more on why not the mildot for under a grand. Just not well made enough to be good? Never had a mildot scope, so I'm not sure what they are capable of if they are cheaper or expensive. I assumed it was more up to the shooter, knowing how to use them.
Now, I have looked at the Vortex Viper pst 4-16 mention....NICE scope! And at the price, I am definately hooked. I like the reticle too. BUT, says they are popular and behind production, so may be months before I can get one. Hmmmm, that sucks. But I'm gonna keep that on my list, and I keep looking around for that used and other too.

Re: Got a headache looking...

I'm now really looking at the Vortex Viper PST series. Questions: mrad is basically mildot right? Is FFP a good option or can I do without (100-1000 yds target, hunting also)? Sorry for the noob questions, due to a head injury, I do not understand what I read. I need it broken down Barney style, or showed to me as I follow along. Since I can't be shown, I'm hoping someone can break it down. I wanna basically know what I should get in a scope for what I want to do. LR and hunting. I've never owned a scope, I've always been an iron sights guy. So any help is appreciated. Anything I could possibly get on a scope, what it means, if its needed. Thanks

Re: Got a headache looking...

you can do 1000 without ffp. all ffp does is keep your measurements consistent threw out the zoom range. keeping the measurements consistent threw out the zoom range will be easier espicially in a hunting situation, but its not a must have.
