OK...I'm building my first 308 that won't be a safe queen so I picked up 500 rounds of 308 ammo. Drive about 400 miles and when I get home I decided to check it out. It has steel cases!!!! I don't know anything about steel cased ammo so is there anything I should be worried about if I just want to use the ammo to practice with and learn how to use the gun. I plan to get some good ammo but thought 500 rds for 200$ was a deal.

Re: Got some ammo at Cabela's

you should be OK if:

keep the chamber and barrel lubed

clean with brush afterwards

you can find brass cased .55 grain m193 for 299.99 shipped.

Its worth the extra $100.00 if this is a go to gun.

Re: Got some ammo at Cabela's

Youll be fine. Don't lube the chamber though. Just clean thoroughly after each outing. You'll be using that ammo to learn to drive your new stick anyways. After that, buy only brass cased ammo and load for what it likes.

Re: Got some ammo at Cabela's

You will be fine. I use Hornady Steel Match ammo all the time. No problems.

Don't lube the chamber though or leave lube in the bore. That's asking for pressure problems with any ammo.

I am pissed at cabelas right now. I picked up 400 rounds of Wichester white box 7.62X51. It is not labeled Winchester brass and it is steel core so I can't shoot it at any range. I wish they would have labeled it online as steel core. I could care less about the brass.
