I have some chuckleheads that are my friends, but they have the "Super Duper Wondermag" syndrome. If it aint a Magnum, it aint nuttin kind of syndrome. Well one of the younger fellas got a moose tag in Maine and his son shot a moose with a 6.5x55, instant drop. He did a great job, I made a statement that the 6.5x55 has killed more moose than any other cartridge. I was just curious if that was a pretty accurate statement.

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

I've heard on Canadien hunts people use the old .303 British and .308... No matter the size of the animal you still have to hit it in the right spot... If it were me I'd take my trusty Browning BLR '81 in .358 Winchester....

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

Scandinavians been killing moose with it for 115+ years, works well but like anything else it depends more where you hit them than with what.

My brother is an Alaskan and he and his boys -bang-flop-'em with 30/06s. He says they are not as tenacious with super will to live like an elk.

I've never killed a moose so my opinion is worthless but I wouldn't feel undergunned with a 6.5 swede.

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

Moose are not as tuff to tip over as hunters think. According to Rod Perry from AFG, 35% of hunters in Alaska use 3006 with the average shot taken around 200 yards. The closer you get to Anchorage the bigger the magnums get and of course so does the shot range. Natives use 3030, 243 and some younger ones use 223 and tip moose over every year. Some good ole boys tipped one over with Kimber 1911 45acp. The argument I am in bear country is valid but that same person will swear by 44 Rem Mag as enough pop to drop a raging bear thinking that 44 has the pop of a 375.

The Sweds kill a lot of moose and that is a accurate statement just like 3006 has killed the most in the north America.

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

I've shot several of both, moose are not near as tuff as elk.

I use a 270 for elk/moose size animals and its never failed me.

Having said that, the biggest moose I've killed was with a 4 in Model 28 Smith, w/150 grn cast SWC 357 as it was attacking my police car at an accident scene in a snow storm. I guess he didn't like my flashing red & blues.

One shot, in the neck just below the skull.

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

In sweden there are about 70 000 moose shot each year,

up untill 1980 half of that number was shot with the 6,5 I would venture to say that the number of moose slayed is quite large.

Yet still, today most are shot with 30-06 and 308 Win still the 6,5 will tally around 15 000 or so each year.

Summed up there has been a lot of moose shot just here with the 6,5x55.

Wonder how many russian moose have been killed with a 12 guage slug and further more how many has been shot with a round lead slug from a BP rifle/musket.

But still it´s one great round for most things and for moose if used with the proper bullet 160+ grain bullets is the key to the success story.

This is a great story. The pic really makes it.

I actually killed my first deer with a similar gun, Model 10 38 spl

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

Is 70,000 moose shot each year a typo? If that many moose are killed I can't imagine the number that aren't killed in order to maintain that kind of population. Your country might have more moose than people!

Sweden have a winter pop of 230 000- 200 000 head of moose, that is after the annual hunt and btw there are about 9 million of us,

yeah I know about the pop of Manhattan or something, but a bigger number than the number of moose.

The number is correct as I know it, we have been trying to mirror the Sweds in moose management for years but have been fought ever step. The size of Alaska compared to Sweden moose management means a few moose could get tipped over for us.

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

We have had fewer wolfs and bears,

those numbers are waaay up in the last 5-10 years and that will hurt the moose hunting.

One thing to remember is that all, well all most all moose hunting in Sweden is for the meat,

aka sustanance hunting?! And competition from other predators is not a welcome aspect.

Re: Greatest Moose Cartridge?

I think and think, and my concern becomes less about having 'enough gun' for the moose, but about having enough for the predator who may be wanting to take me out and steal the kill.

I like a .30-'06 for most anything huntable, but for a bigger bear, an angry bigger bear, I may want to consider the .35 Whelen.

Repeated as necessary...

Yep, my cousin is a guide in Alaska, he runs a Rem 760 35 whelen as his do everything bush gun. Fast, powerful, reliable, ugly. He claims 3.5 groups at 100 with it, williams sights.
