Hi,
I’m not a sniper nor do I claim to be. I just very recently decided to begin looking into long range shooting because I got bored with AR and handgun related things. Not that I was active in those things either. I kept seeing a certain Remington LTR in .308 and it grew on me so I had to get it since my only other bolt guns are a 1903A4 clone and a VZ 24. Immediately after getting it I started to read about the 6.5 CM and pretty much set the LTR aside and am already thinking about that. On retrospect I decide to learn more about distance shooting before investing into another rifle and associated gear so I found you guys and am browsing the forums and reading Ryan Cleckner’s handbook because I know less than nothing about long distance shooting and in my previous life, my longest distance weapon was a 155mm howitzer but that doesn’t seem to apply here. So I’m here to learn.
Thanks.

I was on both. Trained on 8 inch, was on 109A2 for years, A6 for a few years then was on 198, and 119 for the rest of my time.

Yea...you were in the shined boots era redleg ?.

I was only on 109a6's. Active duty is mostly 109a6's now which are about to be a7's. 777's replaced the 198s. 119s are still in all the airborne/airassault units. The guard still has some 198's though I understand.

Yeah, I loved being on a 198 but the 119 was a fun toy with low maintenance. Never got to be on a 102 in basic or the 777 later on in my time. Retired in 2013. AATW

Welcome from Chapel Hill. And I second that on 308 being just fine. I run my 308 out to 1000 yards all the time.

Check out Frontline Defense in Warrenton NC. They are open to public on weekends and the public can shoot out to 500 yards. If you want to use the range during the week and use the 1000 yard range you’ll have to become a member.

I was only on the A6 for about 12 minutes when I was in Germany, then went to Fort Bragg and stayed towed/light for the rest of my career.
