GripTape on an AR mag...

Re: GripTape on an AR mag...

Roughing up mags is not really a great idea for the tactical reason of getting the mags out of the pouches. If you're using the mags for a grip deal with it. A mag that hangs up in your pouch when you REALLY need it is not what you want, and if it can snag or hang up it WILL. I think that's one of Murphy's laws of combat.

Just my 2 cents

Ive used a few different methods of adding grip to mags and Ive never had a problem with pulling a mag from the pouch. I could see it becoming an issue if the user goes overboard with the amount of grip.

I personally use mag pouches that do not cover the entire mag, I find these types of pouches to be very cumbersome. I also only add texture to the lower portion of the mag. This adds grip where I need it and keeps that portion of the mag free from the pouch.

Here is the first pmag I did, only took a little free time...

Re: GripTape on an AR mag...

Personally I just added Ranger Plates to my Pmags gives you all the grip you need to pull it out of your mag pouch or strip it from the weapon if it is hard to remove. Also because it just replaces the floor plate it shouldnt cause any issues when you remove it from the pouch also they are not rough on the hand so you will not scratch yourself up. Lastly they tend to provide a bit more protection to your magazine if you let it fall free to the ground on a reload. Not exactly what you are looking for but an option well worth considering.

I agree with the Ranger plates; or on the cheap side, using some 550 cord and duct tape. (gotta love the duct tape). If you are having trouble pulling mags out of the magazine carrier, make sure the carrier was designed for the magazine. You may also want to work on your grip strength by using physical therapy putty or filling up an old windex bottle with water and squeezing the trigger a couple hundred times. You'll get stronger and it will help your shooting.
